In his first high school basketball game, as a freshman on the Montclair Kimberley Academy's varsity, Kyrie Irving scored seven points in a 66-53 loss to Newark Academy, MKA's archrival and my alma mater. Irving was a precocious rookie -- he was the primary focus of the scouting report, even as a newcomer -- but on the court, the youngster was quiet and unassuming. The result wasn't much better in the season opener his sophomore year, when he scored 22 points in a 70-39 road loss, this time at my high school.

Head coach David Cutcliffe has talked about drawing more students to Wallace Wade Stadium for almost two years now. Now, his words are going directly to students, as this e-mail from someone named Coach Cutcliffe—sent from the e-mail of Bart Smith, Duke's director of promotions—just landed in the inboxes of all undergraduates:

Junior guard Nolan Smith got the most attention—for someone nicknamed Showtime, was it really a surprise that he walked out to Jay-Z rocking blue stunner shades, and then ripped off his jersey to show his retro Johnny Dawkins threads underneath?—and Andre Dawkins was technically a co-winner of the dunk contest, but it was Olek Czyz and his freakish hops that stole the show Friday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium. He busted out the Carter-esque through-the-legs tomahawk, then did a 360 through-the-legs tomahawk, then convinced Seth Curry to head an alley-oop to him.

Being on television is nothing new for anyone associated with Duke Basketball, but usually, the Blue Devils are on ESPN—maybe ESPN2, if they're playing a team just pumped about being in Cameron Indoor Stadium. NBC Nightly News, though? That doesn't happen every day. Some astute and loyal viewers—and Duke Basketball Report readers—noticed two familiar faces on the show's segment about the H1N1 vaccine for pregnant women: Chris Spatola, Duke's director of basketball operations, and Jamie Spatola, Mike Krzyzewski's daughter and co-author of two of his books. The couple is featured in a Duke University Medical Center room, and Chris Spatola's even wearing a Duke Basketball polo. (Plus-one for free advertising!) Congrats to the expecting couple, by the way.

Only two games into the season, Duke is already banged up -- and the timing is particularly unfortunate, given the Blue Devils are just two days away from playing a ranked team.

On Saturday, Duke's defense will line up with the primary objective to slow down Todd Reesing, Kansas' stud quarterback. As Reesing goes, so do the Jayhawks.

Syracuse's football opener Sept. 5 against Minnesota just became must-see TV in Durham.

Last week, the nation became utterly transfixed by a phenomenon so sweeping it required just one name: Pauluspalooza. Err, scratch that. Make it Greg-A-Palooza.

A group of Duke football players and staff members has been hit with symptoms resembling the H1N1 influenza, otherwise known as swine flu, ESPN.com reported Thursday night. Head coach David Cutcliffe said Friday that at some point, slightly less than half the team had suffered from flu-like symptoms, but the number of ill had dropped by the end of the week.

We thought the atmosphere surrounding Greg Paulus at Syracuse was oddly circus-like. Turns out, it was more of, um, a Pauluspalooza.

He's still a few days away from practicing in full pads, but Duke-guard-turned-Syracuse-quarterback Greg Paulus has already managed to steal the spotlight up in New York. It shouldn't come as a surprise, either -- not when there's otherwise no buzz around Syracuse football and Paulus is, at least for now, the most intriguing storyline on the team. Who cares if he hasn't taken a snap in five years? He's Greg Paulus!

It was the controversy du jour in ACC football, and while the so-called Girdle-gate is now resolved, that didn't stop Duke head coach David Cutcliffe from having some fun with the pseudo-scandal.

The writers have spoken, and the predictions don't favor Duke.

If you watch SportsCenter, you probably saw this billiards-like hole-in-one from Saturday's action at the Canadian Open. But you might not have known that Leif Olson, the golfer celebrating the ace and climbing into his brand-new BMW, golfed for Duke from 1999 to 2003.

Greg Paulus will use a fifth year to play football at Syracuse, but once he's done with his intercollegiate career, he might have a chance to remain involved in Syracuse Athletics beyond the gridiron. He doesn't have any remaining basketball eligibility, but his hoops future with the Orange could be on the sideline.

Congregating with the Triangle's three other football coaches at the Triangle Pigskin Preview Thursday, David Cutcliffe mixed in wisdom about football with summer reading recommendations and other personal anecdotes.

It's official: Mike Krzyzewski is going for gold again.

After a brief hiatus from men's basketball, Robert Brickey is returning to the sideline--and he's not going far to do so.

Last year, as Duke quarterback Thaddeus Lewis emerged as Duke's best offensive player, he also happened to become the Blue Devils' best quote. He's candid, forthcoming and shoots from the hip--which is certainly convenient for reporters, given that he's the face of the program.

The release of EA Sports' annual NCAA Football game is a yearly delight for video gamers, even if the company's basketball title usually has greater appeal in Durham. Until the hardwood counterpart is released, though, Blue Devil enthusiasts have reason to look forward to this year's game, which hits stores Tuesday.
