The baseball team (14-25, 0-14 in the ACC) endured another somber weekend with a tough in-conference foe. The losses - 5-3 and 11-5 Saturday, and 11-5 Sunday - to North Carolina (31-11, 10-5), rendered the team winless in 14 ACC matches.

The baseball team turned on its offense late as it beat Davidson (13-19) yesterday 8-3, bringing the Blue Devils' record to 14-22. The Blue Devils were led by solid pitching and the hitting of freshman Javier Socorro and senior Brian Patrick, who extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

Down 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning of the final game in a series where little had gone right for the unranked Blue Devils (13-22, 0-11 ACC), about the only suspense left for Duke fans was whether or not the then-hitless senior Brian Patrick would extend his hitting streak to twelve games.

It was a busy weekend for track and field, as team members competed in events in three cities and on two different continents. Sally Meyerhoff and Laura Stanley led a contingent of men's and women's distance runners in Palo Alto, Calif., at the Stanford Invitational, while the remainder of the teams competed in the Raleigh Relays. Meanwhile, freshman Clara Horowitz represented the United States Saturday in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Duke baseball (13-13) handed the Davidson Wildcats (6-13) a rainy10-5 loss Wednesday at Jack Coombs Field in Durham, N.C. The game came after a rough stretch against ACC-rival Virginia during which Duke lost three games by a combined score of 28-3.

Men's (3-8) and Women's (7-6) swimming posted resounding victories Saturday against William and Mary (3-6). Men won 169-90, while women won 161-83 in celebration of Senior Day, Duke's last home match this year.

On a dominating day, wrestling beat Anderson College and Delaware State in dual meets Saturday. Both victories were by wide margins; Duke pounded Anderson College 29-6 and Delaware State 36-9. With the wins, Duke improved to 4-6 in dual meet competition.

In last night's battle of the unblemished, the best play of the game came with 14:38 left in the second half, as Josh Howard propelled his body high above a pack of Duke rebounders, letting his legs lag behind his torso, hanging in the air for an extra moment before letting loose a thunderous attack on the rim disguised as a put-back. His face raged with emotion, yet Sunday night's game was not a tale of flashy plays or the flair of Howard. Instead, it was a game about persistence, hard work around the basket, and toughness.

The women's volleyball team (24-10) lost to Miami (26-5) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday night in a match in which almost nothing seemed to go right. Competing against the Hurricanes in Madison, Wisc., the Blue Devils lost 30-25, 30-18, 30-20, after taking an early 16-8 lead in game one.

Last year, in what would have been a stunning upset, Wake Forest nearly knocked off the second-seeded Oregon Ducks in the NCAA men's tournament. Of course, that was last year, and there is no other team in the ACC for which last year's performance has less meaning than the Demon Deacons.

Two highly-regarded prospects visit Duke this weekend, Alison Bales and Brittany Hunter. Either Hunter, a 6-3 center from Brookhaven High School in Columbus Ohio, or Bales, a 6-6 center from Beavercreek, Ohio, could provide the all-ready loaded Blue Devils with a quality low-post presence. Both come to Duke highly-decorated; Hunter is ranked no. 1 by All Star Girls' high school rankings, while Bales was selected Student Sports' national Sophomore of the Year after leading her team to a state championship two years ago.

All in all, it has been a good year for the Durham Bulls. As the organization-the Tampa Bay Devil Rays' Triple-A affiliate-celebrates its 100th anniversary, it also looks to celebrate a successful season. The Bulls, by virtue of a 7-1 victory over the Richmond Braves Friday night, clinched the International League's Southern Division title and assured themselves a playoff berth.
