Wrestling wins 2, topping Anderson, Delaware State

On a dominating day, wrestling beat Anderson College and Delaware State in dual meets Saturday. Both victories were by wide margins; Duke pounded Anderson College 29-6 and Delaware State 36-9. With the wins, Duke improved to 4-6 in dual meet competition.

The victories add to a four-match winning streak, complimenting Duke's earlier run of six straight dual meet losses.

"We're picking our intensity up and wrestling really hard," said sophomore heavyweight Roy Williams. "I think we're doing really well. Our record doesn't reflect that as much as it should."

Junior Tim Marcantonio agreed.

"Our team is starting to really come around," he said. "We're not just going for one-point or two-point victories, we're going for major decisions and two point falls. We're starting to have a lot more confidence in our moves."

Also streaking are junior Michael Mitchell and senior Tom Cass, who have won 10 and eight matches in a row, respectively.

"Mike Mitchell did a fantastic job, like always," freshman Matt Burney said.

Marcantonio offered a similar assessment.

"They're just dominating," he said. "They're both hitting their groove and rolling with it. They're hitting their moves one after another."

Strong performances were also recorded by senior Tommy Hoang, Marcantonio, and Burney, each of whom won two matches in Saturday's victory. Hoang defeated Anderson's Clyde Pollack 20-3 in his first match, and won his second by forfeit. Marcantonio beat Anderson's Careef Robertson 3-2, and Delaware State once again forfeited for his second match. Burney won against Anderson's Michael Sanders 8-5 and Delaware State's Walter Robertson 8-2.

Duke looks forward to facing Davidson (1-8) and Tennessee-Chattanooga (3-12) Saturday, Feb. 1 in Davidson, N.C. Last year, Duke beat Davidson 49-0 and did not wrestle Tennessee-Chattanooga.
