Marty Pocius, a redshirt junior who has battled injuries in his four years at Duke, will bypass his fifth season of eligibility, the program announced in a release Sunday.
Maybe it was the rain, maybe it was the weekend, but for some reason, the Twitterati weren't so active during Duke's 72-65 win over Virginia Tech Saturday. Then again, it's Virginia Tech and not Maryland or North Carolina. The best of the best:
Thanks for helping make this week The Sports Blog's biggest in history, breaking the records we've set the last two weeks. We'll be back all weekend for the Duke men's 3:30 p.m. game at Virginia Tech Saturday, the women's senior day against UNC Sunday and two crucial lacrosse showdowns against Maryland. Stay tuned, folks, and enjoy the weekend.
Duke sophomore Nolan Smith suffered a mild concussion early in the second half of Duke's win over Maryland Wednesday and will be sidelined indefinitely, the program announced in a statement Thursday. A team spokesman added that it is "extremely doubtful" that Smith will play in Duke's game at Virginia Tech Saturday, and that the medical staff will continue to monitor his progress.
Duke-UNC games are special in their own right, but analyzing the media's coverage of Duke's games against, say, Georgetown and Maryland is just as fruitful because of the wide range of media outlets that cover the games. For contests in the Tobacco Road rivalry, we have local newspapers and national Web sites. When Duke plays Maryland—especially in College Park—we also have considerable coverage from the Washington D.C. media elite. After all, it's not every day you see Reggie Love, clad in White House-appropriate attire, sitting behind the Duke bench.
Duke Blue Planet has posted its collection of the top five plays from Duke's 78-67 win over Maryland Wednesday and (shock alert!) Gerald Henderson's dunk over three Terrapins comes in at No. 1.

The Twittersphere has erupted with users in the last two weeks, but it truly exploded Wednesday night when Gerald Henderson decided he wanted to reprise his recurring role on SportsCenter's top plays. Search "Henderson" on Twitter, and you'll see at least two pages of lauding Tweets, with descriptions of the junior's dunk ranging from "redonkulous" to "beastmode." Naturally, it was more competitive to make today's roundup of Twitterati. The Darwinian winners:
Selection Sunday is still weeks away, but that didn't stop the NCAA Tournament selection committee from holding its third annual mock bracket session two weeks ago in the spirit of transparency. The committee also traveled to Bristol, Conn. Saturday to perform the exercise again, this time in conjunction with ESPN staffers.

Not even the Twitterati knew what to expect before Duke's 101-91 win over Wake Forest Sunday. When we called for predictions on Twitter, no one called for career performances from Gerald Henderson and Jon Scheyer—but to be fair, if anyone had, we'd be sufficiently spooked. All rationality about this team was dismissed long ago. So the Twitterati resorted to prayers, and Henderson a higher force was there to answer.

Tony Dungy, the former head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, became the first black head coach to win the Super Bowl in 2006, and he's also hailed as one of the smartest men in the game. When he talks, people listen. And when he writes about diversity on the op-ed page of The New York Times, a lot more people tune in.
Yawn. Even a Duke win, the Blue Devils' first in three games, couldn't awake the Twitterati, who seemed more bored than engaged for the entire game. Maybe it was the lethargic tone of Brent Musburger and Bob Knight (more from him later) or maybe it was the cavernous feel of Madison Square Garden—whatever the case, Duke fans managed to nap while their team played in the city that never sleeps. (But David Cutcliffe has already tweeted four times today!)
Through DukeBluePlanet.com, Duke's basketball program has found a way to add a personal voice to a program that most see as personality-free. The athletic department and, in particular, Mike Krzyzewski's team haven't exactly circumvented the media in putting out its own stories—but that type of media control technique wouldn't be so farfetched for such a high-profile organization.
