Greetings From Atlanta

(03/13/09 6:30am)

ATLANTA -- I always knew the ACC Tournament was a big deal, but I didn't understand the effect it could have on a city until I walked into the lobby of the Marriott Marquis, where ACC teams,  media and so-called VIPs are staying this week. The hotel did everything to advertise the fact that it was the host hotel for the  Tournament, which seems to have taken over the city, at least for a weekend. Each team has a decal in the lobby, the logos floating like pennants in any ACC arena, and similar stickers touting the ACC Tournament dot the lobby's windows. The concierges adorn ACC pins (they're here to ACC-ommodate me!), and my room key has the ACC Tournament logo and a "Welcome ACC Fans!" text box.

Smith 'Probable' For ACC Tournament Opener

(03/13/09 5:16am)

Sophomore point guard Nolan Smith, who has missed Duke's last three games after sustaining a mild concussion Feb. 25, was deemed "probable" for Duke's ACC Tournament opener Friday in the Georgia Dome. Smith began to practice Tuesday in Durham, and the Blue Devils flew down to Atlanta Thursday for their Friday night opener against either Virginia or Boston College.

Lawson Named ACC POY; Henderson Only Nabs 2 Votes

(03/10/09 10:57pm)

Just a week ago, it seemed as if the race for ACC Player of the Year teetered between North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson and Duke forward Gerald Henderson, with the individual laurel presumably going to the player whose team won in Chapel Hill Sunday. The Tar Heels beat Duke 79-71, and as expected, Lawson was named the league's Player of the Year Tuesday, garnering 31 of 76 votes to beat out Toney Douglas, who took 27, and Tyler Hansbrough, who had 13.

Henderson Is A Sports Illustrated Cover Boy

(03/04/09 11:25pm)

In the last two months, Gerald Henderson has emerged as Duke's best player. He's now averaging more than 16 points per game, and since January, he's scored 20 or more points eight times, including his 35-point outburst against Wake Forest Feb. 22. And while Henderson has received plenty of acclaim during that span—it seems he's on the cover of SportsWrap every Monday—he now has another laurel to add to his resume.

N&O Story Asks If Crazies Live Up To The Hype

(03/03/09 8:30pm)

In today's (Raleigh) News & Observer, Duke beat reporter Ken Tysiac has a story entitled "Have the Crazies lost their edge?" asking that exact question. The verdict? Duke students are tamer now than they were in the 1980s and 1990s, when they earned the reputation of being the wildest fan base in college basketball, because the Cameron Crazies are more commercial and because head coach Mike Krzyzewski has encouraged students to cheer for Duke rather than bash the opponent.

LIVE BLOG: Duke 81, North Carolina 79 (FINAL, OT)

(03/02/09 3:08am)

POSTGAME: McCants leads all scorers with 24, but four Duke players finish in double figures. Jasmine Thomas paces the squad with 19 pints, Christmas comes in with 18, Gay finishes with 15 in her last gamein Cameron and Mitchell tallies 13. Gay also finishes with 12 rebounds as Duke outrebounds the Tar Heels 54-42. The Tar Heels finish with 33 turnovers--yes, that's 33 turnovers--on 23 (!) Duke steals. Plus, the Blue Devils picked up 32 (!) offensive rebounds. Waner's shooting line in her last game? 2-of-16 from the floor--but one of those two was the biggest shot of the night.
