The ACC, Now On Twitter

The Chronicle's sports section has been on Twitter, the microblogging service that allows for 140-character messages, since August. David Cutcliffe signed up Feb. 19, and he already has more than 180 followers. And now, we have another prominent member of the Twitterati: @TheACC.

The league, which describes itself as "a 12-member athletics conference" in its biography, also offered its first tweet Feb. 19, and has become especially prolific in the women's ACC Tournament. The conference uses its Twitter account to live-tweet games, offer breaking news and provide short descriptions that aren't suited for a press release, but are still interesting bits of information. One offbeat example:

If you aren't already on Twitter, it's about time you joined, if only to have your tweets excerpted in our roundup of the Twitterati after Duke games. Plus, you can stalk famous people (hi, @the_real_shaq!), get a link to all of The Chronicle and The Sports Blog's stories and follow along as we live-tweet basketball games. And if you're the 200th follower of @TheACC, you get... an "ACC prize," according to the site.

See? That's breaking news we never would have learned otherwise.

Or, if you're a Luddite Twitterhater, you can take solace in today's editorial. Our favorite paragraph, purely for the snark factor:

You can connect to your tweetheart and write tweet nothings over the Internet tubes. You can meet new friends: a tweet and greet! You can reconnect to an old enemy and make a peace tweety. Best of all, Twitter's symbol is a little bird on a branch-a Tweety Bird!
