Maron brings comedy to liberal radio

(02/17/05 5:00am)

Air America. Kind of sounds like a revolutionary air filtration system that eliminates 98 percent of dust, dander and spores, but not so. In fact, it is a national radio network working to eliminate the conservative domination of the radio airwaves. Air America Radio, broadcasting since March 31, 2004, originally emerged, at least in part, to counter the Bush re-election machine.

game reviews

(01/27/05 5:00am)

Many times in life, you finds yourself doing the right thing for the wrong reason or the wrong thing for the right reason. Such is the dilemma—actually the thrill—of Mercenaries, where you complete tasks for opposing factions solely in pursuit of monetary rewards. Morality be damned in this land where cash and gunpowder reign supreme.

High-tech laughs: Comics for the 21st century

(02/26/04 5:00am)

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a comic strip has got to be worth at least a million. Luckily, the internet can hold at least twice that many. Comics have transcended your daily fishwrap to the digital medium with remarkable success. You can now get all of your old favorites gratis at sites like comics.com and ucomics.com. More importantly, the Web gives aspiring cartoonists an outlet for their work. With exclusive web comics, cartoonists can cater to a particular interest groups like video gamers (www.penny-arcade.com), movie buffs (www.threaterhopper.com), and cynics (www.toothpastefordinner.com, www.boasas.com).

The most excruciating wrestling move ever

(02/05/04 5:00am)

After wildly unsuccessful CD releases by Macho Man Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan and the Wrestling Boot Band, hillbilly wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin and apparent elfin cookie heiress/WWE diva Stacy Keibler couldn't help but get in on the act. World Wrestling Entertainment, the guilty pleasure our generation knew as the WWF, has released an album that has--remarkably--exceeded the badness of the wrestling itself. This album is, in a word, awful.

Dave still standing for another season of 'Chappelle's Show'

(01/22/04 5:00am)

Last night at 10:30, you missed out on some crazy sh*t, biatch. In the image of "The Ben Stiller Show," "Mr. Show," "The State" and other fine sketch comedy series that have gone the way of Crystal Pepsi, Comedy Central's "Chappelle's Show" is currently pushing the envelope. It delivers at least an hour of laughter in its half-hour time slot with an exceptional assortment of pop culture spoofs, sketches about crack heads and jokes about boobies, knockers, chesticles and sweater puppets. Each episode consists of a smattering of skits, linked by stand-up segues and topped off with a musical performance by one of hip-hop's finest. Artists in store for the upcoming season include DMX, Common and Ludacris.

Music: Jay-Z

(11/20/03 5:00am)

All good things must come to an end. That includes even Jay-Z's streak of nine consecutive platinum-plus albums. At his Sept. 24 Madison Square Garden show, he announced that his upcoming Black Album would be his final studio effort. In typical Jay-Z fashion, though, he's going out with a bang. He's commissioned 11 different producers to craft the album's 14 songs in their respective styles. This cast of characters includes The Neptunes, Eminem, Timbaland and 9th Wonder of local hip hop trio Little Brother.
