____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>This week on The Blue Zone we will be running down the top performances from the 2013-2014 season for each of the departing Blue Devils. Today, we take a look at Rodney Hood.Rodney Hood, Forward, Redshirt Sophomore3) Nov. 19, 2013 vs. East Carolina: After torching Davidson and Florida Atlantic for 50 points on 17-of-21 shooting combined in two of his first four games as a Blue Devil, Hood continued his efficient scoring against the Pirates. The Mississippi State transfer played all 40 minutes, scoring a season-high 30 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field and 12-of-12 from the free throw line. He also grabbed five rebounds, leading Duke to an 83-74 victory. Hood showed he could be a reliable scorer down the stretch of close games, and would go on to knock down the game-winning free throws in the Blue Devils' 91-90 win against Vermont in his next game.2) Jan. 27, 2014 at. Pittsburgh: Although Hood's offensive performance was not spectacular by his standards, the Meridian Miss. native's defensive performance sparked Duke's first big road win of the season. Hood held Pittsburgh's best playmaker and scorer, Lamar Patterson, to 14 points on 4-of-14 shooting, disrupting the Panther offense and allowing his teammates to maintain traditional defensive assignments. He also scored 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including three 3-pointers, and added three rebounds and four assists, turning in one of his most complete performances of the season. The Blue Devils won 80-65.1) March 8, 2014 vs. North Carolina: Hood turned in a special performance in his final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium, scoring 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including three 3-pointers and a perfect 5-of-5 performance from the free throw line. Hood's efficient scoring kept the floor spaced, giving Jabari Parker—who scored 30 points—more room to operate. With its two best players scoring at will, Duke won 93-81 and closed out the regular season in style. Check out the top performances of the other players we've already covered this week: Tyler Thornton; Andre Dawkins; Josh Hairston; Todd Zafirovski
____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>This week on The Blue Zone we will be running down the top performances from the 2013-2014 season for each of the departing Blue Devils. Today, we take a look at Tyler Thornton.Tyler Thornton, Guard, Senior3) Dec. 3, 2013 vs. Michigan: Thornton contributed heavily to Duke's gritty defensive effort in the Blue Devils' 79-69 win, their first win of the season against a ranked opponent. Along with freshman guard Matt Jones, Thornton played a major role in denying Michigan's best player—Nik Stauskas—touches. Stauskas finished with just four points and only had two shot attempts for the game. In addition to his stellar defensive performance, Thornton knocked down two 3-pointers to collect six points. He also grabbed two boards and handed out one assist. 2) Feb. 22, 2014 vs. Syracuse: As has been the case throughout his career, Thornton helped swing a game's momentum with his energy on defense. The Washington, D.C. native's three steals helped fuel Duke's transition game, which gave the Blue Devils a decisive advantage in their 66-60 victory. Thornton also added eight points, making both of his field goals and going 3-of-4 from the free throw line, and had three assists.1) Feb. 1, 2014 at Syracuse: Although Thornton's solid performance against the Orange at Cameron Indoor Stadium was a deciding factor in Duke's victory, his heroics three weeks prior provided his best highlights of the season. After playing just four minutes in the first half, the senior captain re-entered the game late in the contest and knocked down three consecutive 3-pointers to help the Blue Devils cut the Syracuse lead to two with 4:22 left in the contest. Thornton's hot shooting set the stage for Rasheed Sulaimon's dramatic buzzer beater that sent the game into overtime and brought back memories of the shot he hit in 2011 that clinched the Maui Invitational.
In their final regular-season conference game, the Blue Devils overcame a gritty effort from a desperate team to clinch at least a share of the ACC regular season crown.
