No. 1 Blue Devils on prowl after tourney losses in '02

(04/17/03 4:00am)

In the past 12 years, Duke has ruled the ACC in tennis, both men's and women's. In fact, the parallels between the two programs are so similar it's eerie. Consider, the men have not lost a regular season match since 1997 and have won eight ACC tournaments since 1990. And by men's head coach Jay Lapidus' recollection, Duke hasn't lost more than eight matches to anyone in the conference in that same span.

Good grief: Shults' heroics again down UNC, 4-3

(04/10/03 4:00am)

CHAPEL HILL - Sophomore Peter Shults is becoming accustomed to deja vu when squaring off against North Carolina. In a situation nearly identical to 2002, when Shults overcame a 5-3 deficit in the third set only to win 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, Shults played past a sluggish start to pull out another three-set nailbiter in the sixth singles slot, giving the men's tennis team a 4-3 victory over the Tar Heels.

It's all good: Duke not worried about shooting

(04/05/03 5:00am)

When the No. 2 women's basketball team began the NCAA Tournament, the onus it was lugging was heavier than any the program had every carried. As such, Duke's offense has withered since the Blue Devils took on No. 16 seed Georgia State in the tournament's opening round. And though Duke's defense has picked up its energy since postseason play began, Duke's shooting troubles are somewhat of an anomaly.

Close win sweetens women's run

(03/26/03 5:00am)

RALEIGH -- Word circulated quickly through Reynolds Coliseum prior to tipoff yesterday: Alana Beard's status in Duke's second round matchup against No. 8 seed Utah was questionable because of a sprained ankle. Beard had not participated in a team shootaround earlier in the day, and had been up much of the night icing her ankle for 20 minutes every hour. But was there ever really any doubt the two-time All-American would play?

Lacrosse welcomes No. 6 Princeton

(03/19/03 5:00am)

Duke lore has always glorified a Duke-Princeton connection. As the story goes, when James B. Duke offered $6 million to "establish an institution of learning to be known as Duke University," his private estate was near Princeton's campus. Mr. Duke greatly admired the architecture at the nearby school, and therefore when Duke's campus was designed, the buildings took a very Princetonian flavor.

Duke recruits square off in high school playoffs

(03/18/03 5:00am)

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Duke-bound high school All-Americans Alison Bales and Brittany Hunter squared off against each other last Friday night, with Bales' team prevailing in an 88-82 overtime thriller in the big-school Ohio girls state semifinals. Bales, a 6-foot-6 center from Beavercreek High School, overcame a slow start to score 20 points, 16 of which came after halftime.

Shining in new role, Nicholas brings Terps to battle

(02/19/03 5:00am)

In an age when college sports are riddled with disgruntled and impatient athletes that would sooner transfer to other schools than compete for playing time, Drew Nicholas is an anomaly. A 6-foot-3 senior guard out of Hempstead, N.Y., Nicholas' role has changed drastically in his time at Maryland--from serving as backup to All-America guard Juan Dixon the past three seasons, to his current distinction as the second-leading scorer in the ACC with 18 points per game.
