Alexandra M. "Sasha" Burakow, a Duke freshman from Fairfax Station, Va., died Dec. 17, 2003. She was 19. Burakow suffered a brain aneurism on her way home for winter break Saturday, Dec. 13, and passed away early Wednesday morning. The Chronicle has yet to confirm the cause of her illness or death.

The president of The Duke Endowment, Elizabeth Locke, announced her decision to retire Wednesday, effective Dec. 2004. The current vice president and director of the Health Care Division, Eugene Cochrane, will succeed her as president. Cochrane has worked in the Health Care division for 23 years and has been director since 1991.

President Nan Keohane was one of seven recipients of the inaugural Marshall Medal, given at a London ceremony last week by Prince Charles, the Patron of the Association of Marshall Scholars. The six other honorees were Secretary of State Colin Powell, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, engineer and inventor Ray Dolby and President of the Atlantic Council of the United States Christopher Makins.
