Wormuth noted that there has been a decline in military recruitment since the U.S. ended military conscription in 1973, as young people opt to attend college right out of high school instead of considering military service.
Public policy students have spent their summers interning at Congress, city and local government agencies, advocacy groups, non-profits, human rights organizations and newspapers.
The event, moderated by Kate Bowler, associate professor of American religious history, discussed how college students can build connections in their daily lives to promote social and mental well-being.
Yovanovitch opened the talk by commenting on the recent Hamas’ attack on Israel and drawing a connection with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. She noted that “forces of darkness” from state actors such as Russia to terrorist organizations such as Hamas are using “many of the same tactics” to threaten the world order.
This semester, 279 students are participating in the program, which offers multidisciplinary courses spanning areas from religion to medicine and co-curricular activities that foster faculty-student interaction.
