Football searches for direction as it prepares for Navy

(09/26/95 4:00am)

After Saturday night's 41-28 loss to Maryland, the football team finds itself in a position that it has experienced before--mediocrity. Every year at this time, the seniors on this Duke team have been able to tell where their season was headed. In the 1992 and 1993 campaigns, the Blue Devils started off the season being blown out by powerhouses Florida State and Virginia, while also dropping a close game to an out-of-conference opponent to start both of those seasons at 1-3. Those seasons never turned around as Duke ended up at 2-9 in 1992 and barely improved to a record of 3-8 in 1993.

Granville 'quarterbacks' successful Blue Devil defense

(09/14/95 4:00am)

Just eight minutes into in the first quarter against Rutgers, the Blue Devils' defense was looking for an opportunity to give Duke an early advantage in what was a 0-0 ballgame. It had caused a fumble near midfield earlier in the quarter, but the Blue Devils could not score any points from it, so the defense decided to get a little closer to the Scarlet Knights' offense. On first-and-10 from the Rutgers 10-yard line, the defense pressured and wrapped up Rutgers quarterback Ray Lucas, causing a fumble that Duke recovered on the 12-yard line.

Confidence abounds as football prepares for 'Noles

(08/29/95 4:00am)

After losing to Florida State 59-20 last year on the road, the Duke football teamwas happy that this season's game would not force them to return to Tallahassee. Wallace Wade State didn't seem like much of a good luck charm for the Blue Devils either, since the Seminoles had routed Duke 45-7 in Durham in the first game of the 1993 campaign.

No. 7 lacrosse aims to repeat historic upset of No. 2 UVa

(04/14/95 4:00am)

In the last few years, the lacrosse team has been making history by beating Atlantic Coast Conference opponents and also by winning an NCAA tournament game. Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Duke Lacrosse Stadium, the Blue Devils (9-2 overall, 0-2 in the ACC) don't want to make history against the Virginia Cavaliers (9-1, 2-0)--they simply want to repeat it.
