Duke began its season in impressive fashion Sunday, soundly defeating No.7 Texas Tech 85-69 in the opening game of the 2001 State Farm Women's Tip-Off Classic. Five Blue Devils scored in double figures, as the fourth-ranked Blue Devils (1-0) utilized a balanced attack to overwhelm the Red Raiders (0-1) and live up to their high preseason billing.

The women's soccer team competed twice over Fall Break, opening with 3-0 loss to Florida Friday evening, but then rebounding Sunday to beat Florida International 2-1. Against FIU (7-3, 2-1), Alison Sanders provided both goals, and the Blue Devils (5-7) managed to withstand a late Golden Panther run to hold on and snap a four-game losing streak.

Duke dropped its 17th straight game Saturday, losing 37-10 to No. 17 Georgia Tech. A scoring surge late in the second quarter enabled the Blue Devils (0-5, 0-3 in the ACC) to be within a touchdown at halftime, but Georgia Tech (4-1, 1-1) scored on its first four second-half possessions, dashing Duke's hopes for an upset.

In a highly entertaining match between two ACC archrivals, Duke fell to the No. 1 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels 3-1. Capping off an amazing month of golf, NCAA champion Candy Hannemann won low amateur at last weekend's U.S. Women's Open, beating fellow collegiate Natalie Gulbis by one stroke. Hannemann finished the tournament with a score of 291, 11-over par and tied for 31st place.

When I first saw the results of Sunday's Peruvian presidential elections, I was originally quite hopeful. After a decade of Alberto Fujimori's outrageously corrupt leadership, President-elect Alejandro Toledo's victory offered the prospect of an untainted democracy blossoming in Peru. Accordingly, I greeted Toledo's win over political rival Alan Garcia with much excitement.

BALTIMORE -- Unable to overcome an early three-goal deficit, the men's lacrosse team ended its season in disappointing fashion Saturday. The Blue Devils fell 12-10 to Towson University in the first round of the NCAA Championships. Although they managed to tie the score on three separate occasions, the Blue Devils could never seize an outright lead over the sixth-seeded Tigers, who improved to 13-3 and will move on to face Maryland in the second round.
