Mythbusters: Housing reform edition

(02/14/18 5:00am)

Since the front-page column penned by Duke Students for Housing Reform, there has been a considerable response from students, administration, faculty, alumni and parents. Many people responded extremely positively, and a few extremely negatively. Most, I can confidently say, were slightly intrigued. That’s a job well done in the newspaper business these days.

What is a Young Trustee?

(02/12/18 5:00am)

There are certain hallmarks of campus life which when encountered serve as sudden reminders that spring semester is in full swing. The chaotic but lively swarm of tents in K-ville, the destructive sweep of the flu and of course, the Young Trustee election. Signs of the election are everywhere with student groups releasing endorsements, flyers flying all over campus and campaign materials flooding social media newsfeeds.

Duke’s administration 'Completely and Utterly Spineless,' says groundbreaking study

(02/07/18 5:00am)

A 100-year evolutionary anthropology study on the genetic mutations of Duke’s administration has produced findings that have rocked this campus to its very core. The report comes at an awkward time for the administration, facing tough questions over the closing down of K-ville as well as last week’s bombshell revelation that Duke’s most controversial rapper—Executive Vice President Tallman Trask—is still employed by this university. Monday Monday sat down with the scientist behind the research to see what it all meant.

The downfall of DSG

(02/06/18 6:00am)

Earlier this week, news broke of a Duke Student Government Judiciary investigation which found DSG guilty of “flagrant misconduct” regarding Krzyzewskiville. The inquiry found that through a series of bureaucratic missteps, K-Ville had been operating illegally earlier this January and that line monitors had been holding their positions unlawfully. The latest dramatics surrounding the Duke undergraduate representatives have plunged the university tradition into controversy. While some of the language used in describing the situation appears to be, in truth, overly harsh, this supposed scandal does allow for a chance to consider the errors found and their implications for campus politics.

Duke basketball commits reveal love of landscaping

(01/26/18 5:00am)

Over the weekend, high school basketball sensation and No.2 recruit in the country, Zion Williamson, committed to Duke. Williamson has gained notoriety in the basketball community for his outlandish dunking ability. Despite speculation that Williamson would commit to other programs such as The-School-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named-(Not-By-Us-But-)By-Corrupt-NCAA-Officials-For-Being-Equally-Corrupt, Kentucky, Kansas and Clemson, Williamson chose to become a Blue Devil on Saturday. Williamson joins an already-stacked class of incoming players, namely top recruits R.J Barrett and Cameron Reddish. Duke’s powerhouse recruiting begs the question: what makes these superstar players chose Duke over other competitive programs?

DSG Senate overturns SOFC decision, funds JSU's Tu B’Shevat event

(01/25/18 4:36am)

At Wednesday's Duke Student Government Senate meeting, the Senate discussed an appeal from the Jewish Student Union to request funding for its Tu B’Shevat Celebration in full, as the Student Organization Financing Committee only granted $89 of the requested $237. SOFC provided funding for all categories—except for the materials “critical for the event.”

DSG allocates $3,000 for K-Ville common room tent, passes resolution in favor of expanding CompSci

(11/30/17 6:37am)

At Wednesday’s Duke Student Government meeting, the Senate approved resolutions in support of the expansion of Duke's computer science department and against “medically unnecessary surgeries on intersex individuals," heard a presentation on a new mentoring program and funded an Integrity Week.
