VH1's "Big in 2003" awards show airs soon, and I thought it only fitting to use my penultimate column of the semester to highlight some of the big themes and ideas to hit campus over the past 12 months.
It was a pretty low key Saturday. Everyone was winding down from Halloween, and there wasn't the usual option of seven different mixers being thrown by various groups. My friends and I ended up at the E-vite inspired "Don't Mess With Texas" festivities held at our late night location of choice.
Homecoming weekend provided a nice distraction from the typical social grind. We got to see some familiar faces; we had a different excuse to drink for three days straight; and we had the opportunity for a one-night stand (a two-nighter if you worked it right). The only problem: a lot of the people utilizing the infusion of warm bodies to the stale hook-up scene were already in relationships.
Date functions. The bane of existence for many sorority girls. As my fellow columnist Whitney Beckett pointed out last week, deciding whom to take is a dilemma. However, there is a lot more to this than a simple game of eeny, meeny, miny, mo.
There is one relationship that makes the college experience, and those going through it more complete: friendship with members of the opposite sex. We spend so much of our time here focused on hooking up or involved in relationships that we overlook the significance of those whom I like to call the platonics. They are simply put, the male or female friends that hold non-sexual roles in your life.
