Taking a walk down memory lane

(04/16/13 8:26am)

Three years ago, I had no idea what the future had in store for me. I was just a regular boy from Southern California who wanted to try something new. I looked at schools throughout the country and decided to just give college a shot! While researching schools, I came across Duke and pretty much ruled it out immediately. I thought, “Why in the world would I possibly end up in North Carolina and enroll at a school that I have never even heard of?” It just seemed ridiculous. I visited Duke during the Black Student Alliance Invitational, and, even though other institutions were on the table, enrolling at Duke just seemed like the right thing to do.

Y-O-L-O

It has become one of the most viral sayings of all time, “YOLO”: You only live once. When you decide whether or not to go out, you (or your peer-pressuring friends) apply YOLO. Before you do something completely unconventional and out of your comfort zone, you say YOLO, too. Unfortunately, the vast majority of individuals who practice YOLO do not actually stay true to this motto. As college students, we have expectations for ourselves. But our families, our loved ones and our friends also have their own expectations.

Eye candy 101

(03/30/12 4:00am)

There are so many benefits of attending a world class institution. For one thing, Duke has students from all over the globe who come to North Carolina to get educated. For another, I’m pretty sure we can all agree on the fact that there are some pretty good-looking individuals on this campus. Some are obviously hotter than others, and some just happen to be beautiful in their own special kind of way. Have you ever walked down the quad and noticed someone who just took your breath away? Someone who all you could think of was, “God damn!” If you haven’t, let’s just say you’re weird!

World hunger

(03/16/12 4:00am)

It’s safe to say that over the course of our lifetime, we have all come across some sort of advertisement that talks about hunger. Maybe you’ve seen all the ads in newspapers or on the television that ask you to donate a dollar or two to help end world hunger. Sometimes we even come across those pictures of skinny African children in rural villages, and we just gloss over them. Those kids who display signs of malnourishment, with ginormous bellies and fragile bones. Even I, as an African, sometimes get a little bit fed up with the aggressive ways of campaigning. It’s not like I don’t have a heart, but sometimes seeing too much of a particular thing can get boring at times.

Just a girl from Jersey

(02/17/12 5:00am)

On Feb. 11, 2012, America lost a legend by the name of Whitney Elizabeth Houston. Born in Newark, N.J., Whitney was a trailblazer. Whitney accomplished a myriad of things during her time on earth. She became the first black woman to grace the cover of Seventeen Magazine. She had several hits on the Billboard 200. Whitney was the “it girl,” paving the way for several music giants who followed her.

Duke in 2012

(02/03/12 5:00am)

I was sitting in my dormitory room and wondering what this year will hold in store for Duke. Just three days into February, and this year, just like many other years, promises to be an unconventional year for the University. Arguably, social scandals and rankings affect Duke’s public image in one way or the other.

Stress, stress and more stress

(12/09/11 11:00am)

It’s the most wonderful time of the academic school year, a time characterized by Dukies pulling several all-nighters, yawning for the millionth time and gulping their third cup of coffee. For others, it is the time to finally use the reading period as an excuse to look like walking ghosts on campus. We all know the stress involved during reading period is unbearable. Our brains are not only working ‘round the clock, but our body parts are also fighting each other. At times, it even feels as if parts of our body are trying to secede from us through several aches, headaches, allergies, etc.

What's your struggle?

(11/11/11 11:00am)

When was the last time you struggled? Was it a personal, academic or an external struggle? How often do you struggle and how do you emerge from a situation that can either make or break you? So far as a sophomore, I have a different viewpoint on the struggles that I have faced as an individual. Just like a lot of college students, I tend to struggle with my personal and academic identity. I always turn it around for my own good, however.

Duke's global image—we are not diverse!!!

(10/28/11 9:00am)

According to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the University expects to enroll between 20 and 25 first-year international students who receive need-based financial aid. According to the Financial Aid Office, Duke’s admissions policy for U.S. citizens and permanent residents, is “need-blind,” which means that applicants are accepted regardless of their ability to pay for college. Hence, only the elite can leave their home countries in pursuit of a Duke education. As an individual who lived in both Africa and Europe prior to migrating to the United States, it perplexes me to come to terms with this policy. In fact, I do not understand why the push for a need-blind policy for international students is not one of the major priorities of the University.

No hate, just appreciate

I was surprised to find out that 26 states in the Union allow first cousins to marry, whereas only six recognize same-sex marriages. We live in a society that is founded on the basis of individual freedom and the rights to pursue one’s happiness. If this country is indeed the land of the free, one should easily be allowed to express his or her love to whoever he or she desires. Gay marriage is accepted in 10 other countries, including Argentina, Canada, South Africa and Sweden.
