Commentary: #27

(04/14/04 4:00am)

It's your last one," said my editor as we crossed paths on campus. I knew it. I'd been mulling over how to write a fitting end, the proper send-off for two years as a columnist, but more importantly, four years as a student. When I applied for the position of social/greek columnist, I knew I would be writing for a microcosm of this campus. I knew I would have to look deeply into trivial matters, or at least try to anyway. But ending my stint with some grandiose look at life from Thursday through Saturday night would do a disservice to you.

Commentary: Boys will be girls

(03/31/04 5:00am)

Catty. Fake. Moody. Over emotional. Guys use these terms ad nauseum to describe the worst of female behavior. When girls show their not-so-nice sides, male counterparts are quick to call out the improprieties. They become disappointed when a lady gets all disjointed over an inconsequential issue. They chide us for the comments we make about another girl as soon as she walks out of earshot. Their scolding is meant to show us the error of our petty female ways.

Commentary: Spring break for dummies

(03/17/04 5:00am)

Cock-a-doodle-do. We should have known at the sight of the chicken coops next door and the Live Nude Entertainment van parked strategically in front of our house (where it would stay all week) that spring break would be interesting. Ten girls; one house; Key West, Florida. We drove 18 hours to get away from Duke's social scene only to find that our anticipated escape would turn into Duke repositioned in a quaint beach town scenario.

Commentary: The rut

(02/25/04 5:00am)

Lately there has been a feeling of stagnation on campus. People have that look of "same shit, different day" as they go from class to class, East to West to Sanford and back. This weekend a lot of people skipped town, visiting family or friends at other schools, going on interviews and the like. Though we may escape momentarily, the fact remains that we are in an academic and social rut.
