Kilgo Quad undergoing renovations under QuadEx system

Duke’s switch to a quad-based style of residential living is set to impact more than just roommate selection.

As part of a series of university-wide changes amid the adoption of QuadEx, Kilgo Quad will undergo extensive renovations this summer. Six rooms on the first and second floors of Dollard House, named after the donor’s family and formerly House P, will be renovated into a large multipurpose space.

Construction will take place from June to August, according to a release. Union Drive, located between the Bryan Center and Kilgo, will be used as a staging area for the project, which will limit access to only work vehicles beyond the entrance to the Student Wellness parking lot.

The new common area will be constructed with a sense of community in mind. The multipurpose space will be designed and furnished so that it can serve as a study space, host a guest speaker or hold a social event with 75 students, according to Christopher Rossi, assistant vice president of student affairs.

"QuadEx combines three critical aspects of the undergraduate experience at Duke: social, residential, and intellectual life. In turn, we are pursuing infrastructure enhancements that are flexible enough to support all three,"  Rossi wrote in an email.

He added that he's “excited to see what the Quad Council does with the new space.”

Kilgo was selected due to its proximity to the Bryan Center Plaza and Brodhead Center, as well as its lack of a larger gathering space, according to Rossi.

Rossi wrote that the series of renovations will also include an updated kitchen, new flooring, lighting, paint and furnishings along with updates to associated mechanical, electrical, fire protection and plumbing systems. Additionally, the project will create a new ADA-accessible entrance.
