Welcome to the medley of fun-the veritable panoply of winter mirth-that is our fourth issue, the final one for the Year of Our Lord MMVII.

We hope you've previously read and loved the work of our cover model, Esquire assistant editor and former Chronicle humor columnist David Walters, but if not, we're pleased to make the introduction. TV's Mr. December laughs it up about his sweet gig at a magazine we idolize-including his exhausting work on the Victoria's Secret model beat-while TV senior writer Saidi Chen rolled tape.

TV associate editor Dan Riley steers us from the lingerie catwalk to the marine lab docks, his goal over his weekend-long stay at Beaufort to learn exactly what students there... do. A one-bar town, with mollusks the topic of more conversations than Shooter's or job interviews, Beaufort is a strange combination of hippie college scene and inhabitable aquarium. Riley dives in on page 18.

And in another experiment with loving nature, TV associate John Taddei threw caution to the wind-literally-and jumped out of a plane on assignment. Really. While our director of photography was poised on the ground, ready to shoot a landing or a splat, Taddei fiddled with his late-opening parachute, Point Break-style. His story-and some sweet shots of him in a jumpsuit-are on page 12.

Other distractions from exams include our guide to sating your holiday sweet tooth, finding an undiscovered place to study and eating without spending a single dollar (or point). We kept a staffer alive on freebies alone for seven days-read the journal of his adventures, page 9.

Speaking of eating for free, we're ready for some home cooking, sans cardswipe-have a safe break and a happy New Year!
