Dickinson wins ACC Player of the Week

Sophomore Marian Dickinson was named the ACC Field Hockey Player of the Week Monday following back-to-back hat tricks against Appalachian State and Old Dominion.

In Duke's overtime loss to No. 3 ODU Sunday, Dickinson scored all three of the Blue Devils' goals on only three attempts. And against Appalachian State Saturday, the midfielder added an assist to go along with her three scores.

Dickinson currently ranks first in the ACC in points, points per game, goals and goals per game. With 11 goals this season, she has already passed her total of seven goals as a freshman.

Duke sets Homecoming game time

Kickoff for Duke's football game against the Virginia Sept. 30 has been set for 12 p.m. in Wallace Wade Stadium.

The matchup, which will serve as Duke's homecoming, will be televised live by Lincoln Financial Sports.

The Cavaliers, who currently own a 1-2 record, will play their first ACC game this Thursday against Georgia Tech. The Blue Devils (0-3, 0-2 in the ACC) will enter the game after a bye week.

Virginia has won the last six meetings between the two schools and currently leads the overall series 30-27.

ACC football teams struggle

After adding Miami, Boston College and Virginia Tech two years ago to bolster the league's level of competition in football, the ACC has struggled through the first three weeks of the season.

Miami, after succumbing to Louisville, 31-7, last weekend, dropped out of the top 25 for the first time since 1999.

Rutgers, once the laughingstock of Division I football, upset North Carolina, 21-16, in week one-the same weekend that Duke lost to Division I-AA Richmond.

In the last two weeks, North Carolina State has lost to Akron and Southern Mississippi on the road. And last weekend, Virginia fell to Western Michigan and UNC barely pulled out a win while giving up 521 yards of offense to I-AA Furman.

Considered one of college football's power conferences before the season began, the ACC now claims just three teams in the top 25 and none in the top 10.
