An extra spurt of hope

I remember our first meet against UNC—an ACC perennial powerhouse in the swimming world. We prepare for the meet as any other, but pretty much know the outcome before arriving. We were all on the bus outside about to go in for warm-ups and our assistant coach at the time, Whitney Greene, attempted to give a pump-up speech that went something like, “Guys, we know you can swim fast against these guys, and we know we won’t even come close to winning, but—” And before she could finish the sentence Lynch blares from the back of the bus where all the seniors sat, “Well not with that attitude we won’t!” The speech ended at that, but Lynch’s comment gave us all a little extra spurt of hope as we made our way down to the pool.
