DSG Endorsements: Chin for Academic Affairs

The race for Vice President of Academic Affairs of DSG is the weakest of all the races this year with none of the candidates being particularly impressive. However, of the candidates, sophomore Christopher Chin has the most substantive and developed ideas.

Chin's throughly thought out platform focuses on the need for course evaluations to be available through ACES, the continued improvement of pre-major advising, facilitating the discussion of the creating of an Asian-American and Latino-American studies program and a change in the Curriculum 2000 foreign language requirement. Although Chin has these ideas, among others, he failed to present many ideas on how he, as a vice president, would effectivly make these changes.

The question of acheiving tangible results was one that seems to plague all of the candidates, who are more idea- oriented instead of action -riented.

Junior Chase Johnson's platorm is not extensive enough, his main idea being the requirement of taking two pass/fail courses outside one's major as an "intellectual risk." Freshman Megan Smith also lacks a broad enough platform with her most ingenious idea being a closer interaction with OIT.

Freshman David Fiedler lacks the experience and breadth of ideas to be Vice President, but would be beneficial to DSG as an Academic Affairs committe member. His agenda pays particular attention to the needs of freshman and Pratt students--groups that need representation in DSG.

The Chronicle formally endorses Christopher Chin for Vice President of Academic Affaris.
