Student charged for hit-and-run

Students on the main quadrangle of East Campus reported a hit-and-run accident involving a black BMW at 11:25 p.m. Sept. 25. When officers arrived, they found the vehicle in front of Lilly Library. The students reported that the BMW entered the quad at a high rate of speed, sideswiping a vehicle parked at a stop sign. Further investigation resulted in charges being filed against Jamal Modir, 18 years old, of room 210 Aycock Dormitory. Modir was charged with careless and reckless driving, hit-and-run, failure to carry a driver's license and failure to carry registration. He was released from the Durham County Magistrate's Office on a $1,000 bond. He could not be reached for comment.

Tire rolls out

A student reported the theft of a $30 bicycle tire from the bike rack in front of Brodie Gymnasium Sept. 24. The bike was last seen intact at 7 p.m. Sept. 16.

Pizza mysteriously purchased

A student reported Sept. 25 that an unknown suspect used her DukeCard information to make an $11 purchase from Cinelli's. The student said she had not lost her card and has it in her possession.

Purses snatched from Hospital

Two employees reported the theft of their purses from the conference room at 3200 Duke Hospital North. The two employees left their purses in the conference room around 8 a.m. Sept. 23 and discovered the thefts at 1:52 p.m. One employee reported that her purse and contents are valued at $90 and the second employee reported that her purse and contents are valued at $50.

Clothing stolen in move

A visitor reported the theft of clothing from the 5700 ward of Duke Hospital between 2 p.m. Sept. 18 and 1:50 p.m. Sept. 23. The visitor said he left the clothing, valued at $1,050, in his wife's hospital room while moving his wife to a new room. When he realized that he forgot the clothing, he returned to the old room and discovered the theft.

Money stolen from vending machine

An employee reported Sept. 24 that she found a vending machine broken into in the women's rest room near room 4033 of Duke Clinics. The employee reported that the vending machine's lock had been damaged and an undetermined amount of money had been stolen. Damage to the machine is valued at $100.

Laptop taken from Saab

A student reported that her 1997 Saab was broken into while parked in the north gate area of the Wallace Wade Stadium parking lot between 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23 and 4 p.m. Sept. 24. She reported $100 damage to the door locks and the theft of a $1,600 Toshiba laptop computer.

Diamond ring stolen from shower

A visitor reported the theft of her $750 diamond engagement ring from a patient room at Duke Hospital. The victim said she was taking a shower at 10 p.m. Sept. 26 in her son's room and had left jewelry on the sink. The ring was discovered missing at 10:15 p.m.

Monitor taken from law school

An employee reported the theft of a Dell computer monitor from the law school library between 7 p.m. Sept. 26 and 10:15 a.m. Sept. 27. The monitor had been secured to the table by a cable, which was cut during the theft. The monitor and cable are valued at $610.

Breaking and entering damages home

A Duke University Police Department officer responded to the Bishop's House in reference to a breaking and entering Sept. 28 at 9:06 a.m. The window frame of the rear exterior door of the house had been pried away from the door frame and nine panes of glass had been shattered, causing $430 in damage. The door was closed but unlocked. Nothing has been reported missing from the building.

Someone broke out four window panes at the Academic Advising Center. Damage is estimated at $120.

Money bag leaves, sheds $100

An employee reported that Sept. 25, he discovered $100 in cash missing from a money bag between the time it left his School of Nursing office and its arrival at the Bursar's Office.

Valeted car ends up short a CD player

An employee reported that between 7:45 and 11:15 p.m. Sept. 29, he left his vehicle with the valet attendant located in the Emergency Department parking lot. When he returned, he noticed his passenger side door had been left unsecured and his $175 Hewitt compact disc player and $4 in cash were missing.

Window broken

An employee reported that at some unknown time between Sept. 26 and 8:43 p.m. Sept. 29, someone broke a $200 window on the first floor of Edens 1C.
