Women's hoops tips off season against UNC-G

From staff reports

The women's basketball team takes to the floor tonight in Cameron Indoor Stadium against UNC-Greensboro in the first round of the preseason WNIT.

"It's very important for us to get the first win, especially coming off of two exhibition losses," junior Rochelle Parent said. "It's important when a season starts to get that first win under your belt, start the season on the right foot."

The Blue Devils will inject a healthy dose of familiarity to the starting lineup with guards Krista Gingrich and Georgia Schweitzer expected to see their first playing time of the new season.

The two have practiced with the team in spurts, but injuries kept them out of both preseason tuneups and several practices.

"It's very important, especially [in the] first game, to have them back," Parent said. "We're trying to gel as a team, so it's good to get them back into the lineup. They bring a lot of leadership and obviously a lot of talent. We're all just excited to be playing with them again."

The last time the two teams met, Duke ran the Spartans out of the building in a 78-51 romp, a game which began the 1997-98 campaign.
