Combs selected as Outland candidate

Junior defensive linebacker Chris Combs has been chosen as one of 17 preseason candidates for the Outland Trophy, annually awarded to the best interior lineman on offense or defense in college football.

The Football Writers' Association of America developed the list and will name three finalists in November, with the winner announced on Dec. 10.

Combs started all 11 games as a sophomore in 1997. He recorded 74 tackles, including a team-high 17 for a loss, and was named second-team All-ACC for his efforts. The Roanoke, Va., native, who is expected to be healthy for training camp, has appeared in every game during his two seasons at Duke.
