Trinity focuses on faculty mentorship

Increasing support for faculty members was one of Valerie Ashby’s main goals when she arrived at Duke, and in her second semester as dean of the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences Ashby is leading several efforts to meet that goal.


The Arts and Sciences Council discussed two certificate programs at its meeting Thursday, in addition to talking about the pros and cons of Duke's certificates.

Arts and Sciences Council approves certificate No. 20 in sustainability engagement

As Duke continues to trumpet its commitment to working across disciplines, some faculty are calling into question the role of interdisciplinary certificate programs. A certificate, by definition, is meant to be a program that "spans multiple disciplines or departments"—one of the factors that separates it from a minor, which is focused in a specific department.

Faculty question direction of University construction at Academic Council

The Academic Council discussed University construction priorities and Duke Kunshan University during its first meeting of the academic year Thursday. Don Taylor, chair of the University Priorities Committee, discussed the committee’s work and the distribution of University revenue in a presentation to the Council, after which faculty members questioned Taylor and President Richard Brodhead about University construction priorities.

Trinity academic dean model revamped

The academic deans that this year’s Trinity freshman met with during orientation week will be the same academic Deans they meet with before graduating Duke in four years. This is due to Duke’s new four-year dean model, which assigns Trinity students academic deans, based on their first year residences, who will remain each student’s academic dean until receiving his or her Duke diploma.

Few understand that better than Provost Sally Kornbluth, who is starting her second year as Duke's chief academic officer after spending eight years as vice dean for basic science at the School of Medicine.

ICS program looking for stability

Although International Comparative Studies has been at Duke for more than 40 years the program now faces questions about administrative commitment to the program and sustainability amid changes in leadership. The recent questions have emerged since Frances Hasso, former director of ICS and associate professor of women’s studies, decided not to continue as director of the program following the 2014-15 academic year.
