Maximize Duke experience--skip class, watch hoops

(01/21/97 5:00am)

Conventional wisdom around campus is that the days of Duke basketball glory have returned. Listen in on conversations on campus, and you'll hear phrases like "the depth it takes to win" and "Duke is back" being tossed around like the kindling for a massive bench-burning bonfire. And not to overly intellectualize an institution like college basketball, but the return of a nationally-ranked Duke men's basketball team mark the return of fun and happiness to dear old Duke: two cultures that appeared to have gone the way of frats on East and a cramped, understocked and poorly-lit Uncle Harry's.

Out of line

While controlling hundreds of students may seem impossible, it is apparent that some mistakes were made that led to the mayhem at Sunday's game. Public Safety informed DSG officials that tents registering after Thursday morning might not be able to get into the game due to the fire codes and seating restrictions. DSG officials did not convey this possibility to tent inhabitants as they eagerly set up camp and as a result, many of these students were turned away from the game. In their outrage, many of these students have accused DSG of being lax in their duties and unscrupulous in their admittance policies. There have been allegations that tent checks were not done properly and that many unstamped people were let into the game by DSG officials.

K-ville tenters unfairly left out in cold

We are writing this at half time of the Duke-Carolina basketball game-when we should be sitting in Cameron Indoor Stadium with our friends. We are members of Tent 189 and have been camping out for this game since Thursday morning. We realize that the members of our tent have not been camping out as long as many other students, but we put our lives on hold for four days because of our dedication to Duke basketball. DSG officials guaranteed that we would get into the game by allowing us to set up our tent while turning away other prospective campers on Thursday. We would have much rather heard that we may not be able to get into the game when we began camping Thursday morning, but instead, our group and about 60 other campers were informed that Cameron was filled to capacity when we got up to the door at around 3:00 today.

GATSBY enjoys K-ville experience, offers game analysis

Welcome to Krzyzewskiville, (official motto "Chug! Chug! Chug!") sponsored by Natural Light beer. Here in K-ville, we drink more beer by 9 a.m. than most people drink all day. Camping out-be all you can be. The atmosphere here is like Auschwitz meets Mardi Gras. Basketball? There's none of that here, but we've got music, fire, and drunk people-and a lot of all of them. You couldn't ask for anything more. We're the largest yuppie ghetto this side of Greenwich village, complete with cell phones and microbrewed beer.
