Chronicle Sportswrap: March 28, 2016

The Chronicle's Jack Dolgin recaps a busy weekend in Duke athletics. The men's basketball team's season came to a close in the Sweet 16 with an 82-68 loss at the hands of top-seeded Oregon. The men's lacrosse team rebounded from an overtime loss with a dramatic 16-15 overtime win against No. 5 Syracuse, and the women's lacrosse team followed suit with an 11-8 win against No. 16 Virginia. The fencing and swimming teams finished up their seasons with multiple All-America honors, and the track team started its outdoor season over in Raleigh.

Chronicle Postgame: Oregon 82, Duke 68

The Chronicle's Brian Pollack and Sameer Pandhare break down Duke's Sweet 16 loss to the top-seeded Ducks in the West Regional semifinals in Anaheim, Calif. Dillon Brooks scored 22 points to go with five rebounds and six assists as Oregon's athleticism was too much for Duke to handle. Brandon Ingram led all scorers with 24 points, but the rest of his teammates could never really find a rhythm as the Blue Devils' season came to a close on the West Coast.

Chronicle Pregame: NCAA tournament Sweet 16: Duke vs. Oregon

The Chronicle's Brian Pollack previews the Blue Devils' Sweet 16 matchup against top-seeded Oregon in the West Regional semifinals Thursday night in Anaheim, Calif. After a cross-country trek to get to the Golden State, Duke will have to contend with one of the most athletic teams it has seen all season. Dillon Brooks spearheads the offensive attack for the Ducks, and 6-foot-10 center Chris Boucher is both a shot-blocking threat and an adept 3-point shooter.

Chronicle Postgame: Duke 71, Yale 64

The Chronicle’s Jack Dolgin and Meredith Cash break down a nail-biting finish between the Blue Devils and Bulldogs in the NCAA tournament Round of 32. Duke led by 27 late in the first half before Yale used a 15-0 run to jump right back in to the game in the second half, trimming the lead to as little as three before the Blue Devils closed out the game from the free-throw line. Grayson Allen and Brandon Ingram combined for 54 points to send Duke to the Sweet 16 in Anaheim, Calif.

Chronicle Pregame: NCAA Tournament: Duke vs. Yale

The Chronicle's Jack Dolgin and Meredith Cash preview the Blue Devils' Round of 32 matchup against Yale in Providence, R.I. The Blue Devils beat the Bulldogs 80-61 Nov. 25 in Durham with Amile Jefferson in the lineup, but the injured senior will not be available Saturday as Grayson Allen and Brandon Ingram try to punch a ticket to the Sweet 16. Guard Makai Mason scored 31 points in Yale's upset win against Baylor, and the post duo of Brandon Sherrod and Justin Sears will try to wear down Duke's depleted frontcourt.

Chronicle Postgame: Duke 93, UNC Wilmington 85

The Chronicle’s Jack Dolgin and Meredith Cash break down Duke’s NCAA tournament first round victory against the Seahawks in Providence, R.I. Marshall Plumlee stepped up to score 19 of his career-high 23 points in the second half and the Blue Devils made 31 of their 43 attempts at the free-throw line to stave off the Seahawks, who led by three at halftime. Duke plays Yale Saturday with a Sweet 16 spot on the line.

Chronicle Pregame: NCAA Tournament First Round: Duke vs. UNC Wilmington

The Chronicle's Ryan Hoerger previews Duke's NCAA tournament opener, a 12:15 p.m. tip-off against 13th-seeded UNC Wilmington at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. The Blue Devils earned the No. 4 seed in the West and will set their sights on a second straight Final Four appearance by taking care of the Seahawks, who are led by Division II transfer Chris Flemmings. UNC Wilmington is the third-most foul-prone team in the country—committing 23.8 fouls per game—which could play right into the hands of the uber-aggressive Grayson Allen and the Blue Devils, who have made more free throws than their opponents have attempted this season.

Chronicle Postgame: Notre Dame 84, Duke 79 (OT)

The Chronicle's Ryan Hoerger and Brian Pollack recap the Blue Devils' five-point overtime loss to the Fighting Irish in the ACC tournament quarterfinals. Duke led by as many as 16 points early in the second half, but Notre Dame closed on a 22-6 run to force overtime as the Blue Devils missed 16 of their last 18 shots in the second half. All five Notre Dame starters scored in double-figures as the Fighting Irish knocked Duke out of the ACC tournament for the second year in a row.

Chronicle Pregame: ACC tournament quarterfinals: Duke vs. Notre Dame

The Chronicle's Ryan Hoerger and Brian Pollack look ahead to Thursday's quarterfinal matchup between the Blue Devils and Fighting Irish. After outscoring N.C. State in a track meet Wednesday, Duke might expect more of the same against Notre Dame, which beat the Blue Devils 95-91 at Cameron Indoor Stadium in mid-January. Demetrius Jackson spearheads the Fighting Irish attack, and forward Bonzie Colson always seem to play his best basketball against Duke.​

The Chronicle's Ryan Hoerger and Brian Pollack recap an offensive clinic in Washington, where the Blue Devils held off the upset-minded Wolfpack 92-89 in the second round of the ACC tournament. Luke Kennard and Brandon Ingram scored 22 points apiece and Marshall Plumlee delivered the go-ahead 3-point play with 1:14 left to get Duke past N.C. State. The Blue Devils will face fourth-seeded Notre Dame in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Chronicle Pregame: ACC Tournament 2nd Round: Duke vs. N.C. State

The Chronicle's Ryan Hoerger and Brian Pollack preview the Blue Devils' ACC tournament opener Wednesday in Washington, as No. 5 seed Duke meets 12th-seeded N.C. State for the third time this season. Grayson Allen and the Blue Devils won both of the prior two matchups, but point guard Anthony "Cat" Barber is the ACC's leading scorer and helped the Wolfpack push past Wake Forest in the first round Tuesday.

The Chronicle's Jesús Hidalgo recaps the weekend in Duke athletics, which included a 76-72 loss for the men's basketball team in its Tobacco Road rematch with North Carolina, giving the Tar Heels the ACC regular season title. The women's squad was routed in the ACC tournament quarterfinals by Notre Dame, putting the Blue Devils' NCAA tournament hopes on life support, and Duke wrestling qualified four grapplers for the upcoming NCAA championships as Conner Hartmann repeated as ACC champion at 197 pounds.

The Chronicle's Ryan Hoerger and Brian Pollack break down the Tar Heels' four-point victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium—their first since 2012 en route to clinching the ACC regular season title. North Carolina outrebounded the Blue Devils 64-29 and scored 42 points in the paint, spoiling Senior Night for Marshall Plumlee and sending Duke into the ACC tournament as the No. 5 seed.

Grayson Allen had 30 points for the fourth time this season—with 14 of them coming from the free-throw line—and Marshall Plumlee delivered his sixth double-double of the season as the Blue Devils held off a scrappy Demon Deacon squad.
