A severe weather policy was in effect from early Friday morning until noon Sunday, giving students plenty of time to enjoy snowy conditions.

Duke cancelled classes on Friday for the first time this academic year due to winter weather. Here's what students did during the snowy long weekend:

"I walked around in search of open restaurants but everything was closed. I was able to sneak into the library where there were approximately three people on each level."—Sophomore Maria Barzegar

"Round Table did a snow-day event where we invited people into the common room and drank hot chocolate and played board games. We had to change some of our rush stuff around but it worked out eventually." —Sophomore Moses Wayne

"Walking in the snow, building a snowman, and sleeping in." —Junior Sara Pak

"I just slept in, grabbed lunch at Penn, and then headed to the BC to do a minimal amount of school work. After that I went to Pitchforks with a few friends I hadn't seen since before break and we hung out for the rest of the day... Freewater was screening The Martian so we trekked to the BC to see that. It was a good movie, 10/10 would recommend to a friend."—Sophomore Jason Ng

"My friend and I went—what do you call sledding in the North with tubes? Tubing! We went snow tubing down some slopes behind Wannamaker, it got really cold, we ran into a few trees. Later I managed to get an Uber and went to my storage locker to drop stuff off, and we got stuck in ice and backed up into a pole and had to call AAA. That was really scary—I hadn't realized until then how scary snow and ice can be."—Sophomore Ana Galvez

“I played football in the snow yesterday, and it was one of the most fun things I’ve done at Duke.”—Sophomore Austin Gartside
