ESG is confident that Tommy Hessel is the best candidate for Duke Student Government President.
There is no feeling in the world like chanting “Our house” in Cameron with a thousand other Crazies. Stomping, clapping and yelling so forcefully that my joints ache, my fingers sting and my throat burns, feeling the vibrations coming through the air and bleachers, resonating throughout my whole body.
Beyond his demonstrated dedication for campus equality and awareness of the importance of integrity, Tommy’s personal character is very admirable.
Valeria has demonstrated an ambitious and expansive vision in which she deeply desires a connection with a diverse range of student groups across campus and proactive initiatives.
Duke’s Independent Housing reform worked closely with BIG SAD on this project, which was inspired by the frat guys who went to Me Too Monologues in order to use their performative feminism to pick up women.
Amidst all this labwork, all this collaboration and experimentation, all this frenzy to publish and patent, is anyone asking why, if you students are the ones who have to produce all this new knowledge and solve all these problems, why you have to pay us?
I cannot be satisfied with this decision because millions, likely even billions, of women who have experienced sexual, emotional, or physical violence remain unvalidated. Because the trauma of an assault cannot be reversed by a jury’s ruling.
I loved my Duke experience and am a passionate supporter of our great university. However, this decision by the Duke administration is terribly misguided, despite the good intentions behind it.
It is no longer enough for us to use our privilege to recycle or post something to our Instagram story. The stakes are too high for such passive activism.
