Cutcliffe in serious talks with Tennessee

Duke head coach David Cutcliffe’s name increasingly became linked with the vacant head coaching position at the University of Tennessee Thursday, and there has been contact between Cutcliffe and Tennessee representatives, several sources told The Chronicle Thursday. The Knoxville News Sentinel reported Thursday night that Cutcliffe is expected to be hired, "barring a last-second snag in negotiations," according to an unnamed source.




Bomani Jones on race and sports

Bomani Jones is a sports journalist and radio talk show host who has written for ESPN.com’s Page 2 and hosted “The Three Hour Lunch Break” on WDNC-AM 620 The Bull. Recently prominently featured in the HBO documentary “The Battle for Tobacco Road: Duke vs. Carolina,” Jones has an in-depth knowledge of Duke sports. On October 28, Jones visited Duke University’s campus and spoke with The New York Times columnist William Rhoden as a part of the “Sports, Race and Power Conference.” Taylor Doherty and Ben Brostoff, two columnists for The Chronicle, recently had the opportunity to speak to Jones about the role of race in sports. Below are excerpts from that interview.

Quarterback Lewis drawing NFL attention

Against Maryland­ last Saturday—despite the steady and sometimes pouring rain—head coach David Cutcliffe continued to throw the ball. Quarterback Thaddeus Lewis produced, connecting on 30-of-43 passes for 371 yards and two touchdowns en route to a 17-13 victory. As Lewis continues to improve during his time at Duke, there is one question that is becoming harder and harder to avoid: Is Thaddeus Lewis a legitimate NFL prospect?

Dunk contest, Smith’s play highlight Countdown event

From the use of a Mike Posner tune in the introduction videos to the appearance of Duke greats Christian Laettner and Bobby Hurley, Friday night was all about celebrating Duke. The Countdown to Craziness event combined the Blue-White game with videos featuring players, a dunk contest, an awards show and even an outdoor concert, creating a lively start to the season.
