Duke head coach David Cutcliffe’s name increasingly became linked with the vacant head coaching position at the University of Tennessee Thursday, and there has been contact between Cutcliffe and Tennessee representatives, several sources told The Chronicle Thursday. I have no concept of what a big Duke-UNC football game looks like. Will there be a buzz on campus? Will Duke fans actually travel well?

Down 17-12 with less than four minutes remaining, senior quarterback Thaddeus Lewis dropped back on second down and let fly. Darting past his defender with his hands stretched out just far enough to get control of the ball, Conner Vernon made the catch and took it 42 yards, all the way to the endzone, to give Duke both the lead and the game’s momentum.

Against Maryland last Saturday—despite the steady and sometimes pouring rain—head coach David Cutcliffe continued to throw the ball. Quarterback Thaddeus Lewis produced, connecting on 30-of-43 passes for 371 yards and two touchdowns en route to a 17-13 victory. As Lewis continues to improve during his time at Duke, there is one question that is becoming harder and harder to avoid: Is Thaddeus Lewis a legitimate NFL prospect?

The family often debates the details, but if you ask Jamie Spatola, it all started with a dare. Jamie, the daughter of Mike Krzyzewski, was working at Duke’s summer basketball camp doing odd jobs and managing the camp’s bank when, one day, Chris Spatola, a camper and rising senior in high school, came up and introduced himself.

Amid all the talk about Duke Basketball—how far the team can go this year, whether the program has taken a step back in the past five years, how many people need to sleep in a tent for two months to get the best seats in Cameron for the Carolina game—the beginning of the season is a good time to point out the obvious: Beyond talent, you need some incredible luck to win a national title in college basketball.

From the use of a Mike Posner tune in the introduction videos to the appearance of Duke greats Christian Laettner and Bobby Hurley, Friday night was all about celebrating Duke. If you ask Thaddeus Lewis, Duke doesn’t have a quarterback controversy. It has a competition. In 2007, Lewis was a two-year starter when David Cutcliffe took over the program, but among the new coach’s first moves on the job was finding his quarterback of the future.

At Duke, basketball never fully escapes the spotlight. In just over a month—October 16, to be exact—the Blue Devils kick off the college basketball season. It’s too early to say how far Duke can go in the Tournament, how quickly the freshmen can contribute or how significant of a void Gerald Henderson and Elliot Williams leave in their absence.
