ESPN Chats with Coach K and Coach Knight

(01/15/10 12:25am)

An inquisitive Duke fan scrolling through ESPN.com today might have just found a hidden gem. This afternoon ESPN posted a 20 minute interview with Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and former Indiana and Texas Tech head coach and current ESPN analyst Bobby Knight.  The pair's conversation covers numerous topics, including the difficulty of helping young players adjust to the college game and Jon Scheyer's brilliance so far this season.

Duke's Missing Piece?

(12/29/09 7:00am)

One of the downsides to the modern 24 hour sports obsession—incited by ESPN, the internet, and lots of money—is the propensity for sports networks and websites to "make" news (see: Favre, Brett). Even sports columnists, normally one of the last remnants of "journalism" in today's media environment, aren't immune to this issue. And, with apologies to the former Chronicle columnist, Seth Davis' latest article on SI.com seems to be an example of just this phenomena.

Part IV: All-NBA Team

(12/24/09 7:00pm)

This is the fourth in a series of Duke’s All-Decade teams, as named by various Chronicle writers, past and present. At the end of the series, you will be able to vote for your own All-Decade team, and your votes will determine The Sports Blog’s final choice. Stay tuned over the next two weeks for more All-Decade choices.

Kelly Makes Most of First Big Game Opportunity

(12/21/09 3:30am)

Duke's 2009 recruiting class was hailed for yielding two skilled big men to bolster a front-court that most national prognosticators had deemed the Blue Devils' weakness for much of the post-Shelden Williams era. But while Mason Plumlee has stolen most of the spotlight (at least before a wrist injury contributed to him losing his projected starting job), many may have forgotten that it was in fact Ryan Kelly who was the higher-rated prospect of the two, at least according to both Scout.com and Rivals.com.

The Brian Zoubek Dispute

(12/05/09 10:50pm)

I, like most of my colleagues at the Chronicle, often have strong opinions about Duke Basketball. So do my friends. So it isn't uncommon for my block-mates to have to deal with (very) loud arguments coming out of my dorm room, with the topic ranging from the possibility of Andre Dawkins starting (my opinion: not when Scheyer and Smith are upperclassmen) to whether Kyle Singler will go to the NBA next year (I'm personally pessimistic). But there is one topic that we return to time and time again: whether Brian Zoubek is a solid big man or just a man who happens to be really big.

Stuck in Madison: Final Thoughts on Duke vs. Wisconsin

(12/04/09 12:46am)

Oh, the wonders of the american airline system: after our 11:30 (central time) flight was canceled due to "maintenance issues," my colleague Joe Drews and I are stuck in Madison's lovely airport (seriously, it is nice for a small airport) for another two hours until we can begin our journey home.  This gives me the opportunity to highlight a few miscellaneous thoughts and reactions from last night's game that didn't make it into the live blog or The Chronicle this morning:

LIVE BLOG: Duke 69, Wisconsin 73 (FINAL)

(12/03/09 6:43am)

Duke 69, Wisconsin 73 (FINAL): Duke had every chance it wanted in the last minute to tie this game, but some poor decision making at the end cost them.  Despite being down three, Duke was unable to even get a three point shot attempt off—first after Nolan Smith drove to the basket instead of trying for the three with under ten seconds to go, and then again after Singler's bomb pass to Scheyer went off his hands and out of bounds.  With five seconds to go, one had to think a more conventional pass would have yielded an OK opportunity, but alas it was not to be.

LIVE BLOG: Duke 10, Georgia Tech 49 (FINAL)

(11/14/09 10:02pm)

Duke 10, Georgia Tech 49 (4:48 4th): If the game wasn't over before, it certainly is now.  Georgia Tech's seventh unanswered touchdown puts them up 39 on a seven yard TD run by Richard Watson.  We're going to call it a game here at the Sports Blog as the band plays Cascada, to the delight of all 30 students still in attendance.  Why Duke students continue to jump up and down awkwardly to that song every time it is played I will never know... anyways, check out The Chronicle on Monday for more on this very disappointing Blue Devils loss.

LIVE BLOG: Duke 17, Maryland 13 (FINAL)

(10/24/09 9:30pm)

1:42 4th Quarter, Duke 17, Maryland 13: Its deja-vu all over again for the Blue Devils, as Maryland fumbles Kevin Jones' punt and Duke recovers.  That could be the biggest impact the wet playing conditions have had this game.  The Blue Devils go into the victory formation, as the remaining fans muster one last "Lets Go Duke" chant.  More after the game.

Coach K Asks Students to be "Spontaneous" in Cameron

(10/15/09 7:15am)

Speaking in Page Auditorium tonight, Mike Krzyzewski asked a group of prospective K-Ville residents to return to the more "spontaneous" roots of the Cameron Crazies.  Specifically, Krzyzewski asked students to eliminate the cheer sheets distributed before every game in favor of new and different chants for each opponent.  Krzyzewski also announced that he would be encouraging students to create creative signs for the student section this year, and after each game Krzyzewski said would choose his favorite sign, and that student and a friend would be able to sit directly behind the Duke coach during the Blue Devils next home game.
