Marshall Plumlee Nearing College Decision

(06/22/10 11:15pm)

With older brothers Miles and Mason set to start for Duke next season, it is obvious why the youngest Plumlee, 6-foot-11 Marshall, would be interested in attending school in Durham. The senior from Christ School in Asheville, North Carolina has been seen numerous times in Cameron watching his brothers and has reportedly been offered a scholarship by the Blue Devils.

LIVE BLOG: Duke 68, California 53 FINAL

(03/22/10 1:01am)

Duke 68, California 49 1:35 2nd Half: As the Blue Devil mascot hugs a fan with a "North Dakota Loves Duke" sign, Nolan Smith scores his 20th point of the contest to all but put the game out of reach. Zoubek remains intense on the defensive end, though, eliciting an audible scream as he comes out to defend an open jump-shooter. As Cal goes to the free throw line, Zoubek is taken out of the game to one of the loudest ovations from the Duke faithful yet this weekend, and Ryan Kelly and (gasp!) Andre Dawkins enter the game in garbage time.

Heading Down to Jacksonville: Initial Thoughts on Duke's Weekend

(03/19/10 7:58pm)

Loyal readers of The Chronicle's Sports Blog: get used to seeing my name this weekend.  You see, I'm sitting in lovely RDU airport, using some surprisingly free Wi-Fi, and preparing to head down to Jacksonville to cover Duke's first weekend in the NCAA Tournament.  As I'm the only Chronicle reporter doing so (thanks, economic crisis and declining journalism industry!) it will be my most cherished responsibility to keep you all updated on the goings on down in Florida, both in terms of Duke's contests this weekend and any other games that I'm privy to watch at the Veteran's Memorial Arena.  You know what that means: lots and lots of lovely blog posts!

Duke Adds First Commitment For 2011

(03/14/10 6:00pm)

While the ACC Tournament has been the big news this weekend, Duke fans got good news in terms of the future earlier this weekend when Class of 2011 small forward Michael Gbinije verbally committed to the Blue Devils. Gbinije is rated as a five-star recruit by scout.com and fourth in the country at his position, while rivals.com rates Gbinije as a four-star, but still in the top 30 players in the country.

Championship Week: Friday Wrap-up/Saturday Preview

(03/13/10 10:13pm)

Wow. Once again, Friday of Championship week was filled with a host of upsets, and many more near misses.  Most importantly for the Blue Devils, all three top seeds in the ACC Tournament (minus Duke, of course) were upset yesterday, and many in stunning fashion. The two lowest seeds in the tournament, conference cellar-dwellars Miami and N.C. State, upended Virginia Tech and Florida State respectively, while seventh seeded Georgia Tech took down No. 2 seed Maryland. And while Duke fans should be ecstatic about these outcomes in terms of winning the ACC title (although overconfidence could now be a legitimate concern for the Blue Devils), all these upsets might come back to bite Duke come Selection Sunday, as now the team lacks the opportunity to get one more impressive victory to boost its strength of schedule and RPI.

Championship Week: Thursday Wrap-up/Friday Preview

(03/12/10 9:19pm)

Well, Thursday of Championship Week was a buzzer-beater away from being a perfect storm for Duke fans.  First, the Big East was hit by a massive upset bug, as Syracuse, Villanova, and Pittsburgh all went down in their respective first games of the tournament.  While none of these upsets should directly affect Duke's seed (I can't see one bad loss overshadowing Syracuse's entire season, especially since they Orangemen will still have (at least) one less loss than the Blue Devils come season's end), it's never a bad thing to see ranked teams go down.

Championship Week: Thursday Preview

(03/11/10 9:33pm)

Last year, the great Tim Britton took the lead as The Chronicle's own "Bracketologist", analyzing the impact of Conference Championship Week upsets on possible NCAA Tournament seeding, as well as predicting what seed Duke would receive. And while I can never purport to be as clairvoyant as Mr. Britton in that regard, I do know that the next four days will be crucial in Duke's hunt for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tourney. Indeed, while ESPN's Joe Lunardi currently has the Blue Devils projected as a No. 1 seed, SI.com's Andy Glockner (who I chatted with earlier in the season) has bequeathed the final No. 1 seed to West Virginia over Duke. What's more, ESPN's Doug Gottlieb (remember him, un-athletic Dukies?) has stated numerous times on the ESPN rounds that he also feels the Mountaineers deserve the No. 1 seed over the Blue Devils.

LIVE BLOG: Duke 70, Tulsa 52 FINAL

(02/26/10 4:55am)

Duke 66, Tulsa 46 4:01 2nd Half: The "a" in Tulsa! is standing up again, but they certainly don't seem happy.  As the game winds down, Singler sinks a long two to put Duke back up 18, and Duke calls timeout as the Plumlee's reenter the game.  Unless something monumental occurs (ie Zoubek hits a three, Scheyer dunks, or Casey Peters scores) we're going to call it a night here at the Sports Blog.  Be sure to check out dukechronicle.com tomorrow morning to read our full analysis of tonight's contest.

ESPN's Forde Pessimistic about Blue Devils' Chances

(01/27/10 2:24am)

ESPN.com columnist Pat Forde's weekly "Forde Minutes" came out today, and the college sports expert was rather down on Duke, even after the Blue Devils' impressive road victory over Clemson last Saturday.  Forde listed the 10 teams he thinks have a legitimate shot at the national title, and as expected, the list included Kentucky, Kansas and Texas, but also surprisingly included BYU.  However, more shocking was Forde's exclusion of Duke from that list, a choice he took pains to justify:

Q&A with Andy Glockner

(01/20/10 7:00pm)

As the calendar inches closer and closer to March, speculation is growing about the Blue Devils' possible draw in the NCAA Tournament, especially with the increasing possibility of Duke earning its first No. 1 seed since 2006.  And thanks to college basketball experts like SI.com's Andy Glockner, fans may not even have to wait until Selection Sunday to find out Duke's fate.  The columnist puts out a weekly Bracket Watch projecting the tournament seeds every week, as well as a Bubble Watch outlining contending teams' chances of actually making the field of 65.  (Plus, his sister Shari Glockner, now Shari Vermeulen, was Duke Class of 1998, so he can't be all that bad, right?)  The Chronicle spoke with SI's "Bracketologist" via e-mail recently to see how he projects Duke in the NCAA Tournament, and also to get his take on the ACC season in general thus far.
