After losing pair of All-Americans last season, women's lax embraces return of Kaiser, Walters

(02/04/03 5:00am)

It was hard to miss senior Kate Kaiser and junior Meghan Walters at Duke's women's lacrosse games last year. Each of the girls was forced to sit out 2002, as Kaiser tore her ACL and Walters had a nagging leg injury. The two were still a conspicuous presence, to say the least, as they roamed--and often hobbled--along the sidelines, barking out orders and encouraging words to healthy teammates. But too often, Kaiser and Walters were forced to console their teammates after what became a painful 2002 season.

A new wave

There is much ado made of rankings at Duke. The U.S. News and World Report boasts its list of "America's Best Colleges" in which Duke is tied for fourth. The Princeton Review rates Duke in varying spots, in categories ranging from "Best Overall Academic Experience" to "Most Diverse Student Population." Sports Illustrated even deciphered a "Jock Schools" edition that has Duke ranked 19th. In the end, however, these lists are mainly inconsequential, as freshman swimming phenom Katie Ness can attest.

Foley, Matyasovsky answered call for the Blue Devils

You'd be surprised if mighty Duke had squandered its pristine record and place atop college basketball with a loss to unheralded Florida State. The Blue Devils' lofty ranking was in great danger of being chopped down by the Seminoles Sunday afternoon, particularly when Alana Beard was strapped to the bench after picking up her fourth foul with 12:16 remaining in the game. And after the ladies from the Sunshine State knotted the score at 52, everyone inside Cameron Indoor trembled. Would the Seminoles cloud over Duke's No. 1 ranking with an upset?

Freshman Lindsey Harding used her incredible quickness to help terrorize Tennessee on both the offensive and defensive ends.

RALEIGH -- Currently the world's fastest woman, Marion Jones used to be better known for her talents on the hardcourt at North Carolina than in track and field. As a 5-foot-11 freshman point guard, Jones led the Tar Heels to a national championship, largely due to her superior speed and athleticism.

A Class of Their Own

In 2001-2002, the best of the nation's best rivalry between Duke and North Carolina did not come on the basketball court, but rather on the recruiting trail. But as has often been the case in the recent past, the Blue Devils won--Duke's freshmen were rated No. 1, followed by the Tar Heels' at No. 2. The battle along Tobacco Road provided one recruiting coup for coach Matt Doherty's squad, as freshman point guard Raymond Felton has been everyone's ACC preseason freshman of the year. The much ballyhooed talent from Latta, S.C., is an extremely gifted player, as evidenced by the numbers he put up his senior year of high school. En route to being named the Naismith Player of the Year, he averaged over 30 points, seven rebounds, eight assists, and three steals per game. His most conspicuous attributes are his speed, his strength, his vision, and proficient passing.

Young Blue Devils find confidence in blow-out

Despite a 19-point, five-rebound, four-assist performance, Alana Beard's most memorable moment came before the opening whistle blew in the team's first action of 2002 against Premier Players. After her name was announced, Beard rushed through a tunnel of her teammates, ran over to Sheana Mosch, and gave her an overly aggressive chest bump. A stunned Mosch tumbled backwards and fell into a hapless Duke cheerleader. Mosch remained on the floor for a moment laughing while the cheerleader limped towards the sideline. Mosch soon picked herself up and joined the No. 1 Blue Devils before a 100-51 shellacking of Premier Players.
