David Stern for president

(12/06/04 5:00am)

It is a sad statement for the way our society is as it enters the year 2005 when the main stories dominating our headlines in the wake of a historic presidential election are that a man beat up a drunk guy in the stands and that another guy used what he knew as “the cream” and “the clear” so he could hit a small ball with a long stick a long way. It is decided: professional sports suck and it is ruining society.

Now that Boston has won the Series

(10/29/04 4:00am)

Something strange was bound to happen. First, the night of Game 4 was the night of a total lunar eclipse, so the stars were in alignment. It’s also a leap year, which I’m sure is astrologically significant. I’m also sure all the other strange stuff that has happened all year is all pointing to the turn of recent events, which surely will impact the nation and the world for years to come. Boston has won a World Series. I’ve wanted to see this for a long time, in fact it may have been on top of my list. Now that it’s scratched off (note: This ain’t happening again till 2090, so enjoy it), it’s time for some other things to happen that I personally really want to see:

A time for choosing

(09/17/04 4:00am)

It has been written many times over that Duke is at a crossroads. I could rehash argument after argument which has been written in column after column about the life of the student at Duke in the past 10 years. But I choose not to, for the direction in which we will head rests on the shoulders of a new administration. Yet on the eve of the inauguration of our newest president, the course this University will take is not yet apparent. Do we wish to continue in the direction of the past 10 years and preserve the traditions of this University, for good or for ill? Or do we wish to strike a new course and reform the University in a new light? Will this new president choose to pursue an ambitious agenda a lá Terry Sanford, whose efforts are memorialized with a renowned department named in his honor? Or will he choose to follow the lead of J. Deryl Hart, whose three-year tenure as president is best judged by his namesake, the Hart Reading Room.

COMMENTARIES - Duke should consider Durham's demands

(03/05/04 5:00am)

Durham, North Carolina. How we love thee so. The Duke/Durham relationship is viewed differently by many. Some see it as a rich symbiotic relationship, like the reciprocal harmony that exists between those tiny birds who gain protection from rhinoceroses by cleaning dirt and stuff from their fur--at least I think its like that, I'm not a Bio major. Others see the relationship similar to an ugly leach sucking the blood out of a large fully grown mammal. Those among Durham residents who see the latter aren't the biggest Duke fans.

Commentary: The internship scramble

(02/06/04 5:00am)

It's the beginning of February and unbelievably the Last Day of Classes is already in sight. Those who are seniors are freaking out if they don't have a job yet and those who aren't are already dreading their senior year Last Day of Classes. So juniors, sophomores and even freshmen are going to look to solve that horrible problem of not making over $100,000 in five years by making sure they are guaranteed to get a decent job after stepping out of Wally Wade, diploma in hand. And that means around this time of year these students are going to be looking for one thing--summer internships.

Column: Remember to be safe, smart and not stupid

(01/09/04 5:00am)

Well another year has come and gone. Spring marks the mass return of most juniors who were abroad, the propping up of tents in K-Ville and quite a few seniors wondering what the heck they are going to do after May. I'm sure most had a good break and quickly forgot mostly all they learned first semester. However, a few things that happened last semester should be remembered and not forgotten. Towards the end of school last semester, the issue of student safety was becoming a hot-button topic for a lot of people (remember?) and hopefully it will remain so. This is something that should not be forgotten because of a long absence from school. This is not something that should be forgotten with the graduation and matriculation of new students. Anyone who enrolls at this school should always remember while we may feel isolated from the real world we are still very close to it.

Column: The gathering storm

(11/05/03 5:00am)

Dear citizens of North Carolina: A storm is gathering in your great state. I'm not talking about the next big hurricane or the annual Andy Griffith look-alike festival. I'm talking about a foreign invasion. The state has not had to worry about foreign invasion since the Revolutionary War (or since the Civil War as some residents will say), being protected from miles and miles of land and ocean from the nearest countries. Maybe your guard has been let down over the past 200 years and you've been spending all your time reenacting the War Between the States. I don't know, but this state is at a cross road. You're at a crossroad, because the aliens are coming.

Column: Basset affair centennial forces retrospective

(10/15/03 4:00am)

Two thousand and three is a year which marks many things. To some it is the culmination of the successful presidency of one of the greatest fundraisers in the country, President Nan Keohane. Some see 2003 as the year in which Duke witnessed fierce campus debates on race and social life. To others it marks the year hell froze over and both the Red Sox and Cubs actually went far into the playoffs.

Column: Cutthroat recruiting has no place at Duke

(09/12/03 4:00am)

With being one of the top institutions in the country comes the responsibility of staying at the top, and today's universities will stop at almost nothing to ensure a school's greatness is secure. A school's administration is never at rest. It always has to be in attack mode, from buying up surrounding land for new buildings and building brand new parking garages to changing the name of a school's honor code to some name like "community standard" without significantly changing the code itself.
