The January doldrums bring horror, goth and fantasy to the Carolina Theatre. Every year the Nevermore film festival celebrates the weirdest of the weird, from claymation-horror-musicals (The Happiness of the Katakuris) to low budget genre-busters like Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter. This year, you won't have to wait: On Friday the Carolina kicks off a Nevermore spin-off, the first annual Escapism Action, Adventure and Animation Film Festival.

Meeting someone new is at once a remarkably ordinary and formidable experience. Everyone knows the chafe of loneliness; and while we're constantly surrounded by directionless individuals similarly lost, somehow it seems that no one ever really finds anyone. Those rare occasions when we actually do make contact and connect with another soul become the most dynamic and stimulating moments of our lives.

Grifting is a lot like film making. Success at either relies on precise timing, charisma, and slight of hand. In either scenario, the true mark of talent is the patron's willingness to accept the subterfuge. A truly profitable grift is a beautiful thing. Like a well made film, it has balance and poetry.

The film industry has always been driven, in large part, by the immense amount of revenue generated by merchandising in the wake of a blockbuster release. From t-shirts and movie posters to the latest Happy Meal toys, there is no realm of our modern consumer culture that has escaped unmolested by the Hollywood machine. Perhaps no commercial sector has exploited the merchandising of major movie studios more successfully than the world of video gaming. Whether it's the newest Disney cartoon characters or a grizzled action hero, it seems that every new release coincides with an identical appearance on game store shelves. While no one could dispute the mutual benefits of the likely pairing of video games and movies, this summer two brothers may have forever changed the way this partnership is viewed.

From Australia comes a rare diamond amongst the coal of the usual Hollywood fare that floods the megaplexes during the long days of summer. The film, Whale Rider, tells the story of a people and their culture struggling to maintain a timeworn tradition against the temptations of a modern age. Their leader, an aging Maori chief named Koro, clings to the ways of the ancients as a guide for his people. While those around him struggle to incorporate their native past into a cosmopolitan present, occasionally slipping into lifestyles of comfort and drug use, Koro struggles to keep the Maori way alive. In the end, it is his granddaughter, the surviving twin of a newborn who was to be the savior of their people, who believes in the value of her culture, and in so doing is able to rally and lead the village into a brighter future.

The new documentary from director Jeff Blitz peers long and hard into one of America's most time honored competitions; a grueling battle of wits, intelligence, guile and cunning, it could be none other than--the spelling bee! To put this monumental event into focus Blitz dives into the lives of eight of the contestants of the 1999 Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee. These sometimes touching, silly and even critical character vignettes give a wide angle look at the youth of our country. While they provide the backdrop for what will become a rigorous battle of wills and knowledge, these shorts play as abbreviated biopics that speak volumes about their subjects.

At some point in every great actor's career, he must begin to face his own mortality. For Clint Eastwood, that point is approaching faster than a runaway stagecoach. But, with his newest character's being a heart transplant recipient instead of an icy tough guy, the question needs to be asked--Has Clint aged like a fine wine or more like Anna Nicole Smith's butt? merica's position in the complex network of global interdependency is one fraught with responsibility, gravity, and consequence. The moral implications of the war against terror are many and subtle. Any movie to emerge in the new sociopolitical climate must handle these issues with the utmost skill.
