Helton follows Cutcliffe from Tennessee

Prior to his hiring as head football coach in 2007, David Cutcliffe had no ties to Duke. But perhaps that’s a good thing. In the distant past, Duke possessed a proud football tradition, but Cutcliffe first made his name at a school with a much more recent record of success. He was very highly regarded during his tenure at the University of Tennessee, and that has given him access to players in the football hotbed that neighbors North Carolina.

Duke traveled to Charlottesville hitting the best they had all season, but Virginia showed why it is the top-ranked team in the country. The No. 1 Cavaliers (36-3, 16-2 in the ACC) exploded for 31 runs in three games and swept the Blue Devils (20-19, 4-14) to strengthen their lead atop the ACC.


The Case for...Duke

For those who have lived under a rock for the past year or so, Duke won the 2010 national championship in Indianapolis. Several variables contributed to the fourth title in head coach Mike Krzyzewski’s tenure at the university, but three central areas formed the foundation for the success: high percentage shots, offensive rebounding and the emergence of a post presence.

The Cavaliers finished near the bottom of the ACC standings last year, and despite seven new recruits, this season hasn’t brought much more optimism—at least in the rankings. For the second straight year, the Cavaliers begin as No. 11 in the ACC preseason poll.
