Duke faces another elite ACC opponent this weekend as it travels to Atlanta to take on No. 3 Georgia Tech. After being swept by fellow ACC power Miami two weekends ago, the Blue Devils (16-9, 3-6 in the ACC) will need a solid performance to avoid a similar fate.
Since 1998, Duke has been awarded a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament nine times. That’s almost twice as many as Kansas and North Carolina (five apiece), and at least three times as many as any other team, yet the Blue Devils have endured a well-documented struggle with high expectations.
It may not have been Senior Night, but that’s sure what it felt like Monday in Cameron Indoor Stadium. No. 2 Duke used a late rally led by senior captains Joy Cheek, Bridgette Mitchell and Keturah Jackson to defeat No. 7 Louisiana State, 60-52, to send the Blue Devils (29-5) to the Sweet 16 in Memphis.
Duke looks to take another step towards correcting a disappointing start to its season Saturday afternoon against Penn State (0-5) at Koskinen Stadium. With difficult home losses to No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 4 North Carolina, the No. 10 Blue Devils (3-3) have yet to put the pieces together that earned them the preseason No. 2 ranking.
“We signed our two most important recruits right there,” head coach Bill Self said last April. “Those two together mean at least 12 to 15 wins.”

Duke made sure to keep its new home at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park tidy over the weekend, sweeping Fordham in dominating fashion. The Blue Devils (4-3) eked by the Rams (0-6) Friday, 5-4, but used big innings to dispatch Fordham 11-4 and 8-3 in the next two contests.
Duke opens up its home schedule this wekend against traditional Atlantic-10 conference power Fordham. Although the Rams (0-3) have garnered over 4,000 wins in their 150 seasons—the most wins in NCAA Division I baseball history—the last decade was forgettable, as Fordham has an NCAA tournament drought stretching back to 1998.
Duke survived a brutal weekend of ACC play, eking out wins at No. 19 Georgia Tech Friday and at home over a determined Maryland team Sunday. The pair of victories all but secured the No. 7 Blue Devils (23-4, 11-1 in the ACC) their first conference title since the 2006-07 season with only two games left on the regular-season docket. After two tough matchups and 350 miles of travel in less than two days, Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie was simply glad to escape with the sweep.
Last May, the Blue Devils waited with bated breath to see if their 35-24 record would be good enough to earn them an NCAA regional berth. While Duke wound up being left out of the mix, being in a position to potentially earn a bid represents the great progress the team has made under head coach Sean McNally’s tutelage the last four years.
Duke dashed out of the gate over the weekend, running circles around Denver and No. 11 Vanderbilt to start the year with two wins.
MIAMI — Despite enjoying warm weather in Miami, Duke was forced to overcome a frigid shooting spell to eke out a victory over the Hurricanes. The No. 7 Blue Devils (15-2, 3-0 in the ACC) extended their win streak to eight by sending Miami (13-3, 1-1) to its first loss in four games.
Duke extended its dominance in Cameron Indoor Stadium Sunday afternoon, holding off a depleted Southern California squad for its 19th straight home win, 78-72. The No. 11 Blue Devils forced 22 turnovers and outscored the Trojans 42-8 in the paint, but barely avoided an upset after a first half of uncharacteristically sloppy play and Southern California’s hot three-point shooting.
For the third straight year, Duke was sent home in the opening round of the ACC tournament, this time falling 1-0 to Boston College in overtime. After 95 minutes of scoreless play through the heavy rain and wind of Tropical Storm Ida, the Eagles scored with a header to advance to play No. 20 N.C. State—which defeated No. 2 North Carolina—in the tournament semifinals.
When the final buzzer sounded in Boston during last year’s Sweet 16 loss to Villanova, Duke was forced to face not only the reality of another early postseason exit, but also the loss of one of its most vocal leaders, Greg Paulus.
On Senior Night at Koskinen Stadium, the Blue Devil underclassmen stole the show as No. 16 Duke (12-4-0, 4-3-0 in the ACC) routed Virginia Tech 4-1. The Hokies (5-10-2, 2-5-0) became the Blue Devils’ fifth victim in as many games.
After a fall season defined by inconsistency, as three freshmen adjusted into starting roles, Duke found its rhythm over the weekend, winning the NCAA Fall Preview in Wilmington, N.C. The No. 15 Blue Devils shot a 17-over 881, one stroke better than No. 7 UCLA and No. 3 Auburn.
Though the air was cold in Koskinen Stadium, the temperature had no effect on a red-hot Blue Devil offense. No. 19 Duke (9-4-0) caught fire in a strong second half, blasting past Navy, 3-0. The Blue Devils were hardly challenged by the Midshipmen (8-7-0) in their first head-to-head meeting since 1979, helping head coach John Kerr celebrate his 100th career victory in style.
Last year, Duke’s season ended abruptly in the first round of the NCAA tournament, as the Blue Devils were upset by UNC-Greensboro 2-0 at Koskinen Stadium. Tonight at 7 p.m. in Koskinen, the No. 9 Blue Devils look for vengeance against the Spartans.
Following a week dominated by missed opportunities and unsatisfying play, No. 12 Duke returns home needing to regain its early-season rhythm. One of the 11 top-25 teams to suffer a defeat to an unranked opponent over the weekend, the Blue Devils must recover quickly to claw back among the ACC’s elite.
