LIVE BLOG: Duke vs. Georgia Tech

(02/05/10 4:59am)

Duke 84, Georgia Tech 61: 3:13 left in the second half: Our seats are about six feet from the incident that just happened. From what I could see, Scheyer was hounded by three Georgia Tech defenders, calls timeout, the referee motions that timeout has been called, then, as Scheyer is leaning away, Rice makes a move for the ball and shoves Scheyer on the court. Rice was T'd up, and a chorus of boos fell on him. Krzyzewski ran all the way across the court to check on Scheyer, then to quiet the crowd, which, frankly, was starting to get hostile. As Scheyer shoots his two free throws, I'll take this chance to say that this one is in the bag. Unless something huge happens, this is The Chronicle Sports Blog signing off. Be sure to check Dukechronicle.com later for more news from this win over Georgia Tech.

Coach K Endorses NCAA Tournament Expansion

(12/16/09 10:47am)

After Tuesday night's Duke win over Gardner-Webb, head coach Mike Krzyzewski was asked in a press conference what he thought about the recent discussion to expand the NCAA Tournament to 96 teams. It's an idea that suddenly is the most polarizing question in college basketball because of the possibility that the NCAA will opt out of its television deal with CBS after this March's Tournament. That would pave the way for ESPN to swoop in with the acquisition, and a 96-team tournament would bring in more revenue -- and earn the support of more coaches -- than a mere 65-team tournament.

Cutcliffe Candidly Speaks On Recruiting O-Linemen

(09/23/09 5:00pm)

The always quotable David Cutcliffe explained the difference between acquiring offensive lineman in college football and the pro game during his weekly press conference Tuesday. He said that he was still confused as to how NFL teams manage to mess up so many times in drafting linemen, and he thought that part of it had to do with their overused focus on the physicality of the players.

McCallie 'Hopeful' NCAA Mock Selection Exercise Will Bolster Best Practices

(07/21/09 6:00am)

Head coach Joanne P. McCallie, along with 16 other Division I women's basketball coaches, took a break from the grind of the recruiting trail last week, choosing to spend her July 16 and 17 in Indianapolis at an NCAA mock selection exercise. According to a press release, the coaches had "access to all the tools (game results, RPI calculations, etc.) that the actual committee follows when they put together the championship bracket... giving [them] a taste of the five-to-six days the real committee goes through on an annual basis."
