A few weeks into the semester, the Duke Coffeehouse has released its schedule and it is excellent. Phosphorescent, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down and Durham's own John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats will be making stops. Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu has also rescheduled his cancelled show from last semester. K Records is also sending Mahjongg Sound out and the hotly anticipated (at least for me) new Hammer No More the Fingers album will drop at the Coffeehouse.

A few weeks ago, the Nasher Museum Blog posted an Art Net story concerning art museums slashing their budgets in response to the economic slump. From the story:

(Via Vulture) Oscar-winning, song-singing Once couple has broken it off. They are over. Their love that once was is no more. Who gets to keep the award? But New York Magazine's Vulture makes a better point, noting that the break-up of Marketa Irglova and Glen Hansard is definitive proof "that there is no such thing as love." Well said.

(Via BCR) I just caught wind of this, but the new Sitar on 15-501 (you'll know the buildling when you see it) is holding it's grand opening today and offering a free lunch buffet to anyone who comes before 3 p.m. That means get in your car now and go eat Sitar. If you are a Duke student sick of the daily tikka masala, this is a chance to expand your horizons for no cost. Enjoy.

The benefit of the bar show is often the intimacy. The downside is that it's a bar--and a good portion of the people are there to drink and socialize, introducing a distracting chatter to the music.

Vincent Moon's La Blogotheque has 10 new performances, called the "In a Van Sessions." It's like Black Cab Sessions with more space. Among the session are Bowerbirds playing "La Denegracion" and the Rosebuds, who are playing at the Cat's Cradle tonight, with a cute-as-ever version of "Bluebird."

Regardless of what you have to say about The Boss, his song from The Wrestler is perfect fodder for an Oscar nomination. So why did the Academy snub Springsteen and only nominate three songs (two from the overhyped Slumdog Millionaire and one for WALL-E--yeah, Peter Gabriel). From the Gold Derby on the LA Times' Envelope site:

(Via You Ain't No Picasso) I hate Starbucks coffee. It's nothing about the store--I kind of love the idea of it--it's just the coffee. I think it's weak and not worth my--what is it now--$5. Don't get me started on their frapachaccis. But I kind of want to go to the ultimate corporate coffeeshop Jan. 30 to pick up Sweetheart, the chain's potentially semi-awesome Valentine's Day-themed covers compilation. Here's the tracklist.

Oscar nominations are out. If I wasn't in the midst of learning about anarchy in modern art, I would do a real breakdown. But initially, I'm shocked at the Academy's decision to give the fifth best picture slot to The Reader. Way to disappoint.

Annuals are giving away museum tickets to Chapel Hill's Ackland Museum of Art if you go to their Jan. 31 show at the Cradle. Art is music. Music is art. It's all harmony. Check it out.

EW blogger and Duke alum Dave Karger has 10 predictions of possible surprises at tomorrow's Oscar nominations announcement:
(01/20/09 11:19pm)
The speculation that formally began Nov. 5, 2008 has reached its peak and Michelle Obama has answered our questions. She chose this yellow dress from Cuban-born Isabel Toledo for the inauguration ceremony. There is likely lots of symbolism associated with this dress (yellow is hope, a Cuban designer?), but what we care about is fashion. And it's certainly not a terrible choice. It's very Michelle Obama. It's a tad bit too sparkly, but it certainly ushers in Camelot 2.0 to D.C. Her only major mistake is the leather gloves, olive in color, that she wore with it. I understand keeping your hands warm, Michelle, but really? Poor color choice.

Here's an award you probably haven't heard about.

If you can't be in D.C. for Obama's inauguration, Carlsbad, Ca. isn't a bad option. At Legoland, they have recreated the inauguration in Legos. I wish I was this talented with Legos when I was 10. For more images of Legoland's inauguration and general inauguration photos, check the Boston Globe's excellent photo blog, The Big Picture.

(Via Salon) Just because you are not braving the DC cold to witness Obama's historic inauguration doesn't mean you can't have the 44th president right in your home. He can be in your kitchen, playroom, bedroom, even your bathroom! That's right, that's a photo of Barack Obama on a roll of toilet paper.

Oscar predictions have been coming in for months at other blogs. We at the Playground don't need to spend months speculating. One (expansive) list (with some obscure categories) shall do. It seems these things are pretty much set at this point, so I threw in some surprises because you never know with L.A. Check back Jan. 22 for an analysis of the awards and until Feb. 22 for our take on the major categories. And without further ado, here's the list.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is preparing an inauguration-day gift for President-elect Barack Obama. It's called "49 Songs from North of the 49th Parallel." The CBC has an extensive list of tracks for Canadians to vote on. The list includes the likes of the Band, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Ameri-Canadians Arcade Fire.

New York-based social stunt group Improv Everywhere just held its 8th annual No-Pants Subway Ride. The 2009 edition was held during a snow storm and saw the participation of over 1,000 people. I'd like to see how people would respond if this was on one of Duke's C-1 buses or Durham's DATA lines--or a C-2. Who knows what happens on central campus.
