(Via Scan) Indy Week's Scan blog has news on the new Red Collar and Hammer No More the Fingers release shows. We already knew about HNMTF's release show at the Coffeehouse April 4, Red Collar's was news to us. Red Collar will play the Triangle Brewing Co. Chapel Hill's Nightlight is possibly the area's bets venue for a punk show. With no stage and low ceilings, it's a simple venue that befits a small, engaging show. And Sunday night, it even had the right mix of sweat and booze mingling in the air to make it a welcome retreat from the falling snow outside.

This weekend has a lot of great things going on, especially at the area's local venues. Some highlights:

Newly signed to Jagjaguwar, aged rockers Dinosaur Jr. just announced a slew of shows for the coming months. But our concert focus remains on the Triangle and of course the formerly-signed-to-Merge band is making a stop at Carrboro's Cat's Cradle April 27, one day after their show at Asheville's Orange Peel. For the full tour schedule, refer to Pitchfork.

So maybe No Doubt isn't going to be the biggest thing to come to the Triangle in 2009. The N&O's On the Beat blog is reporting that Irish rockers U2 might be making a stop at Duke's Wallace Wade football stadium this fall in support of their forthcoming release No Line on the Horizon (March 3). According to MyNC, the performance to the Triangle would be Bono and co.'s first in over 25 years. The last time a band played Wallace Wade was the Rolling Stones in 2005. David Menconi' post at the N&O makes it sound like the band is definitely trying to work out a deal, but it remains to be seen whether the University's athletic department will agree to it.

An early front runner for best stadium tour of the summer has made its case. After years of waiting, Gwen Stefani is getting back with the band that made her big and doing a full summer tour with No Doubt. The band will be stopping at Raleigh's Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion June 8. Tickets go on sale March 7 at Live Nation.

Evan Rachel Wood will return to her hometown of Raleigh, N.C. May of this year for a stint in Theatre in the Park's performance of Romeo and Juliet. Her brother, Ira David Wood IV will make his directorial debut for the performance. (what's with the double first names or use of the middle name, Wood family?)

Following the success of last year's Crue Fest, Motley Crue is assembling a second go with Crue Fest 2: The White Trash Circus. Sponsored by Live Nation, the tour will hit 30 cities between July and September, including Raleigh's Time Warner Cable Pavilion at Walnut Creek Aug. 23 and Charlotte's Verizon Wireless Amphitheater Aug. 30. Last year's tour featured Motley Crue, Trapt, Papa Roach, Buckcherry and Six: A.M.

Scientific Properties' Golden Belt complex, currently existing as a residential and artistic space only, added its first retail client. LabourLove Gallery will join the complex in summer 2009, the same time it plans to launch its online store. LabourLove is a welcome addition to the Durham arts scene, especially after Branch Gallery closes Feb. 28 and runs its final shows this spring. Although LabourLove sounds a lot less Chelsea than Branch. From the press release:

Following every other section of the Chronicle (except the Op-ed pages), recess jumped on the bandwagon and got a Twitter account. Make sure you follow us (the account name is chronicleRecess) here for all your arts news and happenings concerning Duke, Durham, the Triangle and even the world.

David Edelstein seldom updates his NY Magazine blog the Projectionist, but when he does, it's a real treat. He posted Friday about the Oscars. It's a rather sobering post--if a post on a frivolous awards show can be that. But it's the most insightful thing I've read on the awards show in a while. On Kate Winslet:

Scottish post-rockers Mogwai will be playing the Cat's Cradle with the Twilight Sad on Friday, April 24. The tour comes in support of their 2008 release The Hawk is Howling. Mogwai were a lot more seminal in the 1990s, especially with their celebrated debut Mogwai Young Team. For the full details of their tour, check here. Tickets go on sale Friday, Feb. 27 on eTix.

We're jumping on this incredibly late, but it bears mentioning nonetheless. The NC Comedy Arts Festival has grown immensely since a few hundred improvisers descending on Chapel Hill for a weekend back in 2001. Hosted by Carrboro's DSI Comedy Theater, it has since evolved into one of the largest comedy festivals in the country, and the largest in the Southeast. Last week was the stand-up portion and this week is the improv.

Tomorrow, from 5 to 7 p.m. (perfect pre-Jandek or Oscar timing) Durham's excellent paninoteca Toast and Chapel Hill's recently relocated and similarly excellent 3 Cups coffeeshop are joining forces to provide what looks to be a great menu. Toast owners Billy and Kelli Cotter will be on hand to answer questions about the menu, which will be paired with select wines. Held at 3 Cups (227 Elliot Rd. in Chapel Hill), it costs $25. Reservations are encouraged. For more info, click here.

So the Oscars have been leaked onto the Internet. And the winners, are hardly surprising. Naturally, the Academy has denied any truth to this list. But if the Oscars are anything like the Golden Globes, then by the Anne Hathaway logic we can assume that

After three decades of releasing music, five of recording and about 40 shows, Texas-based Jandek will be gracing Triangle audiences with his music. Joining him on keyboard will be the Mountain Goats' John Darnielle, drummer Brian Jones and Cantwell, Gomez and Jordan's Anne Gomez on bass.

After weeks of build-up, our final Oscar prediction is here. Check out our previous predictions and don't forget to come back Sunday for our Oscar LIVE BLOG. Because there is no point in addressing the nature of this award, we'll just skip to the nominees and winner Slumdog Millionaire.
