Former FDA commissioner Mark McClellan comments on Trump's appointee to lead the agency

After Dr. Robert Califf stepped down from his position as commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration earlier this year, President Donald Trump announced his new pick to head the agency—Dr. Scott Gottlieb. Gottlieb, a conservative, worked as a senior adviser to Dr. Mark McClellan when McClellan was FDA commissioner from 2002 to 2004. The Chronicle spoke with McClellan, now director of the new Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy, about Gottlieb's nomination and his thoughts on rising drug prices and health care reform.


Former FDA commissioner Robert Califf talks dangers of drug importation

Senator Bernie Sanders and other Democrats recently introduced a bill to Congress that would allow commercial importation of drugs into the U.S. In response, four former commissioners of the Food and Drug Administration have penned an open letter, urging Congress to consider the risks of allowing drugs to be imported. The letter's authors included Dr. Margaret Hamberg, Dr. Andrew Von Eschenbach, Mark McClellan—current director of Duke’s Margolis Center for Health Policy—and Dr. Robert Califf—currently a faculty member at the Duke Clinical Research Institute. The Chronicle spoke with Califf, who served as commissioner from February 2016 to January 2017, about the letter and his views on the issue.

LGBTQ activist Sarah McBride campaigns for Hillary Clinton in Raleigh, criticizes House Bill 2

Sarah McBride, an LGBTQ+ rights activist and national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, campaigned for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in Raleigh Sunday. In 2012 at American University, McBride came out as transgender and this summer spoke at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, becoming the first openly transgender person to make an address at a major party convention. The Chronicle spoke with McBride about House Bill 2, the controversial North Carolina law that restricts bathroom use to a person’s biological sex, and transgender rights on college campuses.


Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards says women's health 'front-and-center' in presidential contest

Before before voter registration closes Friday in North Carolina, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards visited voter registration drives and phone banking events to campaign for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. In Cary, N.C., Richards touted Clinton's work on women's healthcare access and her positions on reproductive rights. She told the gathered volunteers and field organizers that Clinton has "withstood the most grueling and demeaning campaign" and that Sunday's presidential debate was "a national embarrassment." Richards spoke with The Chronicle about the significance of women's health issues and reproductive rights in this election, and what she thinks is at stake.


Students and faculty question proposal for Duke Energy facility on campus
