I started bartending at the Loop this semester, and as a result I’m on a quest to create the perfect playlist for my shifts. I’ve composed all kinds of playlists for myself and others—playlists of songs for studying, for long drives, for heartbreak, for pregaming, et cetera. And now I feel the need to create a new kind of playlist: a playlist for the Loop Bar. I’ve wanted to make this playlist for a few weeks now, and I haven’t progressed too much. For the time being, we bartenders have relied on Spotify radio stations, which have been less than perfect. Therefore, our alternative is to curate a set of songs that more accurately captures the mood that we envision for this space in which our friends and fellow students congregate. In an ideal world, this probably means we would have multiple playlists tailored to a variety of conditions, but also in an ideal world, I would be acing all of my classes and getting nine hours of sleep every night.

News alert: the government shut down on Tuesday. This upsets me on many levels, but mostly I can’t get over how my fall break EOS field trip won’t be making it into Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. And underlying that distress is mostly my disappointment that I won’t be able to shoot killer rolls of film photographs. Pics or it didn’t happen, as they say. And it’s all too literal for me right now.

MLK Day: The timeless trending of justice and equality

(01/18/12 2:18am)

Yesterday marked the 44th anniversary of the assassination of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. Every year on this day we actively remember the call for justice and the remaining obstacles that face many of us in the fight for equality. Throughout the year we may forget the greater purpose to our lives—broadly put: to make the world a better place, in the sense that we should strive to make differences that more align our world with our values. And even as Duke students, we must remember our university’s commitment to applying knowledge in the service of society, both at home and abroad. The time for justice is always now. The time for equality is always now. Buying TOMS shoes and spending your lecture classes on Freerice.com, while admirable initiatives, are sorry excuses if they make us feel like we are being the change we wish to see in the world. Listed below are some ways we as Duke students can be more civically engaged.

“I’m gonna break it down to you, and it’ll change your life, alright? I feel as though music is everything. Let me show you why. Everything’s just molecules vibrating, and vibrations are the frequency of sound — so then we’re all built from sound. Everything is built from sound, so that we are music. That’s why it changes us.”
