Rain on the Duke parade

(05/01/06 4:00am)

The first time I visited Duke, it was one those soggy-quad evenings-all mopey math majors and muddy flip-flops. I slumped on the corner of a Residence Life-supplied prison mattress. I listened to an ROTC and a depressed transfer-to-be argue about curriculum requirements. This was college alright, but not anything identifiable, nothing with attitude. I played video games to escape the dead air. Turned out everyone else was at Cameron. Who would want to spend four years at a place like this? Duke sucks in the rain.

He who had always seen himself up there in the North, but he too who had stayed down South to have a little more fun and play football for Duke. What was it like for Mike Kaplanis, after he had turned his back on the pre-med track, after he had worked his ass off to graduate a year early, after one of his best friends pleaded with him not to sell his soul because everyone did it? What was it like for Mike Kaplanis when Morgan Stanley finally offered him a job as a first-year investment banking analyst?

A burgeoning force in her field, a devoted teacher and a wit with a shoe obsession, Saunders struggled with a chronic liver disease she carried since childhood even as her body broke down and multiple liver transplants at Duke fell through. She was 29.
