Under Control

Certain things are in your control and certain things are out of your control," J.J. Redick told TV's Alex Fanaroff in this month's cover story about the heralded basketball star. "I'll be able to look back... and be proud of what we have accomplished."

That's a philosophy and a sentiment we understand well here at Towerview. While we've never been able to control how many people read our magazine-or what exactly they read within our pages-we have had control over what this magazine can offer you. Over the course of the past year we've strived to bring you more of what you-our readers-want. Our final double issue highlights TV's growth, particularly with the expansion of the new sections (BusStop and Gothica) we first introduced back in July. We've expanded and evolved, and, as a result, Towerview today looks much different than it did a year ago. We think you'll agree that TV's on the way up, and it's only going to get better.

From feminism to finances to fashion, Durham politics to Dukies in Washington, we hope this year we've brought you something you can't wait to read, or at least that's made you think. Looking back, it's been quite a year-Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, the re-election of Durham Mayor Bill Bell in November, the defeat of both top-contending basketball teams, the controversy over rape allegations against the lacrosse team-and all along, Towerview's been there for the ride, giving you the news and perspectives you can't get anywhere else on campus.

But where would we be without the people behind those events of the past year? From scholars to undergraduates to athletes and administrators, we've got you covered with our first annual "Dukies of the Year" awards. Selected by an outside committee of students, administrators and faculty members, these ten (and a half) DOTY winners represent the best of Duke in 2005-2006. As you can see in the profiles of each of our winners, they've made an impact not just at Duke, but around the globe. Who knows what the world holds for them-or for Duke-in the coming year? One thing is for certain, TV will be there to keep you informed.

Unfortunately, just like J.J.'s reign at Duke, we won't be there with you. This issue marks the end of Volume Seven and its staff. As graduating seniors, we leave behind a publication that has helped shape our Duke experiences. We hope it has helped shaped your views as well.

To everyone who has made this year's Towerview a success, you have our heartfelt gratitude. And to our readers-our lifeblood-thank you.
