As No. 16 Duke men's basketball is back in action against Queens after a week off, the Blue Zone identifies an important player for each side to keep an eye on:

Duke: Kyle Filipowski

Duke has had an inconsistent season, but lately, it has found its stride with an impressive string of three straight victories, most notably toppling then-No. 10 Baylor 78-70. Amidst this resurgence, one name stands out as a linchpin in the Blue Devils' success — Kyle Filipowski. The ACC Preseason Player of the Year will be a force to be reckoned with as Duke gears up to face Queens in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The battle in the paint will become crucial in this game, especially considering the Royals’ prowess in offensive rebounding, securing 12 boards against No. 18 Clemson compared to their opponent's six. Enter Filipowski, the towering 7-foot forward with elite strength, agility and tenacity, leading the Blue Devils in rebounds with an average of 9.3 per game. His presence will be paramount in preventing Queens from capitalizing on second-chance points. Filipowski's offensive impact is equally significant, boasting an average of 17.9 points per game and an impressive 50% field-goal percentage. His ability to dominate the paint has been on full display this season, especially against Hofstra, where he scored 28 points on 10 field goals. This skill set will be instrumental for Duke, especially with the Royals facing the innate defensive challenges that come with being a smaller team. Don’t be surprised if the Westtown, N.Y., native racks up his fifth double-double Saturday afternoon.

Queens: AJ McKee

Looking to lead his team to its first ranked victory and pull Queens out of its three-game losing streak is junior AJ McKee. The Charlotte native plays with high intensity on both ends of the court.

The Royals enjoy showcasing their offensive firepower, averaging an impressive 80.7 points per game. With 87 3-point attempts and 201 field-goal attempts this season, McKee has proven to be a crucial part of Queens' offensive strategy. Averaging 17 points per game, McKee's scoring proficiency is not just a testament to his individual prowess but a key factor in all of the Royals’ successes this season. The Independence High School product does not have any hesitation; when there’s an opening, odds are McKee will take the shot.

McKee’s offensive aggression is complemented by an equally relentless defensive mindset, resulting in an impressive tally of 24 steals throughout the season. This tenacity has proven instrumental in Queens' ability to mount comebacks and close out tight games, a facet of the game the Blue Devils have struggled with throughout the season.  Specifically, against High Point, the Royals were trailing by one point in the final 30 seconds. McKee forced a crucial turnover and subsequently knocked down two free throws leading to a Queens win. As the Royals look to upset Duke, McKee’s commitment and passion could be a deciding factor.
