Editor's note: Explaining the retraction of an article from The Chronicle's website Friday afternoon

On Wednesday, an article was published in the Recess section describing a writer’s experience at the Alec Benjamin concert at the Ritz in Raleigh. 

The writer of the story claimed that a security guard told him a concertgoer fell from a balcony. Recess editors did not adequately fact check the piece and, post-publication, The Chronicle could not verify the incident. 

Because the claim was published without adequate fact-checking, the article was removed from The Chronicle’s website. Going forward, members of Chronicle staff will be reminded of our fact checking policies and journalistic standards.
