2019 NCAA tournament preview: Virginia Commonwealth

VCU Rams: 25-7, 16-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference

Head coach: Mike Rhoades (2nd season)

Players to watch: Marcus Evans (13.8 PPG, 3.2 APG); De’Riante Jenkins (11.4 PPG, 3.9 RPG); Marcus Santos-Silva (10.1 PPG, 7.4 RPG)

Season recap: The Rams ran through the A-10, finishing the season with 12 straight victories before falling in their conference tournament quarterfinal to Rhode Island. Rest assured, VCU got into the NCAA tournament with impressive wins over bubble teams St. John’s and Texas, as well as only losing to Virginia by eight. Their loss to the Cavaliers was their only Top 25 game of the season.

Ranking 332nd in the country in 3-point percentage, don’t expect the Rams to hoist many deep balls. VCU has great length around the court and will look to drive the ball to the lane every chance it gets. If fouled, however, the Rams are only middle of the pack in the nation for converting free throws at 69.9 percent.

How they make a run: With so many scoring options, they keep the ball moving and put the ball in the basket all over the floor.

How they falter: The Rams run into a team with solid interior defense and cannot get anything going from beyond the arc.
