Duke women's basketball 2017-18 player preview: Bego Faz Davalos

Bego Faz Davalos

  • Year: Graduate Student
  • Height: 6-foot-3
  • Position: Center
  • Last year’s statline: 14.6 PPG, 11.2 RPG, 1.8 APG, 3.5 BPG

Game breakdown: Davalos, a graduate transfer from Fresno State, is a rebound magnet with the physical tools to become a defensive presence for Duke. Davalos runs the floor and finishes well in transition which is a very useful trait for a Blue Devil team loaded with backcourt talent. She is also not afraid to play hard-nosed basketball as shown by her double-digit rebound average last season. Because of Duke’s outside shooting tendencies, Davalos’ rebounding abilities will be invaluable, giving shooters extra confidence to take shots knowing that Davalos will collect any missed ones. If Davalos can develop a consistent midrange shot, she will earn valuable playing time to give Duke greater interior toughness against bigger opponents.

Role on the team: Although the Duke offense will not play through Davalos, her rebounding contributions and defensive tools will make her an asset on both sides of the ball. As a graduate student, Davalos also brings experience to the Blue Devils, though she is a newcomer to the squad. She will most likely come off the bench to relieve senior Erin Mathias in the frontcourt or play alongside her in a bigger lineup for Duke. In either scenario, Davalos will give Duke valuable minutes in a role similar to the one Camille Little fills in the WNBA.

Projected stats: 3.5 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 0.5 APG
