Mikayla Boykin could break out and star at point guard this year.

Duke women's basketball 2017-18 player preview: Mikayla Boykin

Mikayla Boykin

  • Year: Freshman
  • Height: 5-foot-9
  • Position: Point guard

Game breakdown: Ranked as high as the No. 5 recruit in the nation before coming to Durham, Boykin has the potential to be the next great Duke point guard in a line of many. In an interview with the Chronicle this summer, Blue Devil head coach Joanne P. McCallie said Boykin has the strength and outside shot to one day equal former Duke great Jasmine Thomas.

With extreme athleticism, Boykin will be a threat with and without the ball. The North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year will be very difficult to guard, and can also bring it on defense. Although she struggled in the Blue-White scrimmage, scoring just three points, she should be a star if she develops and lives up to her potential.

Role on the team: With point guard Kyra Lambert due to miss some time after tearing her ACL in March, Boykin has an opportunity to play her way into the starting lineup to begin the season. McCallie has also discussed playing a three-point-guard lineup at times, with Lexie Brown, Lambert and Boykin. If she improves from her showing in the Blue-White scrimmage, she'll be a major contributor on this team and one of its main weapons.

Projected stats: 12.1 PPG, 4.5 APG, 1.1 SPG
